rattle canning carbon forks?

  • hey all -
i'm fairly sure i'll receive a downpour of hatred for this, but googling/using common sense/using educated guesses still proves somewhat inconclusive in this area...
i just got a new carbon fork and it looks really wack against my frame (black gloss finish). of course looks aren't everything, but it would be nice if I could do a simple rattle can job + laquer to have it match a little more...
what's the vibe? i've honestly gotten a COMPLETELY varied and mixed bag of truth nuggets on this one.
(i can't imagine that spray painting carbon can honestly react with the fibres... or can it?)
    thanks in advance.

  • Do what you want. It'll probably look shit, but that's just my opinion.
Carbon is so 2009 anyway - it's all about titanium now...

  • What about lightly sanding down the top layer and then lacquer?

  • ^ Wot e said. Won't stick if you don't anyway, and so long as you don't go through the lacquer, you aren't going to fick with the carbon anyway.

    Just do it.

  • thank you all very very much

  • Honestly I wouldn't advise it. 9 times out of 10 it's probably going to be fine but there are a lot of nasty checmicals in rattlecan paint that could potentially seep and fuck with shit which is the last thing you want especially with carbon. Besides I'm struggling to see how normal carbon finish could look anything but pretty decent with a gloss black frame.

  • shit federal - i appreciate your input but i'm back to square 1 now!
no, but seriously, thanks man. last thing i want to do is fudge up some nice carbon forks...
seriously, it does look a bit off, you'd be surprised. it might be more the forks themselves than the colour... they're going on an early 90's 531c ribble, so maybe they're just a bit 'off' in general...
    thanks again!

  • No worries boss. Exactly what I was thinking, would be such a shame to ruin a lovely set of forks like that, or worse have them fail on you as you're riding along. Hmm, maybe you could try email whoever makes the forks? I have a feeling that they're just gonna say that they don't reccomend it but maybe it's worth a shot.
