Delighted to hear this story, but don't understand why the wheels weren't locked properly?? D-locks... Normally lock the rear wheel and seat post together? Front wheel and down tube together. Anyway, glad to hear all was ok in the end...

Nice one Andy!
I think a good punishment would be to have the rear wheel on a bike and the thieves hand put into the moving spokes.

(crappy tags though...)
So the girlfriend and I were riding back from xmas shopping in Oxford St (mistake #1), when we decided to stop for a beigel in Brick lane (mistake #2). We locked our bikes outside Richmix (mistake #3) and walked down to the beigel shop. Walked back not 15minutes later and both my wheels were gone. What a truly horrible feeling.
I left the frame and went down Sclater st where all the scallys sell stolen shit. Luckily I ran into about 6 PC's standing around and told them the story. They got straight onto the CCTV operator who managed to track the guy stealing the wheels, then handing them to one of the vans that sell bike parts.
The PC's searched the van, but couldn't find anything. At that moment a guy came up and asked if I was looking for a pair of wheels, one black one white. Apparantly someone had offered him a pair of wheels a few minutes ago, Some cops started taking his statement whilst some others had a look around the surrounding stalls and there they were, 2 wheels casually leaning up against some other bikes. The shopkeeper swore he hadn't seen them before, and to be fair they may have been dumped by the theif when all the cops descended on the area and started searching vans.
The cops asked the witness and I to come down to the station and give a proper statement. As we were walking down brick lane, it came over the radio that they had picked up the thief and were taking him into custody. After taking statements from the witness, (who was offered the stolen wheels by the thief and who was willing to go to court and testify) the cops were heading down to properly charge the guy. In the end a great result!
Moral of the story: Don't shop on Sundays. Play polo!
