  • Right... Here's what I've learned for all you potential whisky owners...

    The up front cost is the spirit, barreling, storage for 10 years.

    Bottling, Duty and VAT is later...(!)

    The 2k one is the extra peaty one. There's a cheaper option at 1200 apparently. (My Dad got lucky and did it early on for a lot less - more like 800 quid apparently).

    It's a bourbon barrel, we think about 190 litres. It reduces as I said over time but is diluted at bottling so stretches out some (unless you request that it remains cask strength). We're looking at almost 250 70cl bottles.

    I'm afraid that's as much use as I can be at the moment, but it's enough info to decide whether you want to get into a dialogue about it with the distillery. For my money, there's not much nicer than a Bruichladdich at 10 years from one of their Bourbon barrels. If you're Laphroig lovers it's a more sophisticated, less pokey version of that.
