You've got to remember, Oliver, a large majority of the British population do not consider themselves European.
In fact, the term 'European' was a considered a vicious insult and a terrible slur in England, right up to the year 1992.
"You won't believe it, Marjory, but my daughter Felicity has gone on one of those school exchange trips, and whilst abroad she started going out with... a European!"
"EEK! How revolting! She'll have a baby that smells of garlic, won't she?"
