Just fitted my Giles Berthoud mudguards tonight.
bit of a palava to be honest. fiddly doesn't really do it justice. i managed to round off the allen key fitting on one of the rear attchment widgets that goes into the mudguard eyelet. I think some paint must have got in there because it was quite tight and certainly doesn't want to come out. needing a new bolt and some other bits occasioned a very pleasant trip to clerkenwell screws where i also got a cool hand drill i needed for the job.
problem is, i can't get the fukken bolt out now. it's a domed head bolt with a 3mm allen key fitting that is now just a useless round hole. went at it with a pair of pliers for half an hour till slipped and gave myself painful blood blister. then i tried cutting a slot in it with a hacksaw to use a screw driver but the bolthead seems to be made of cheese and just wears away so that didn't work either. i've had to leave it in there only partially done up but stuck fast till i can figure out what to do... cut the head off and use an extractor?
actually compared to that fuck up, the rest of the drilling and cutting wasn't too bad. fiddly job and i really could have used three hands at several points but they're on (bar the knackered bolt issue) and looking gooooood.

its nearly time to put away the colnago and dig out the ribble for winter, problem is the ribble doesn't have much clearance for trad mudguards..........i've been using those plastic cruds( £20 odd a pop), which keep breaking.
any ideas out here are there any metal mudguards that would fit and stay strong over the winter

Skully has some narrow aluminium ones that fit with even very tight clerence. Salmon or something.

SJS do their own raceblades, and they are cheaper than the SKS ones. I've had some for a year now - they're great.

Condor have a skinny alu mudguard that look great and doesn't appear to take up much space, best check it out.

Has anybody fitted full guards to a Pompino? I'm looking for some guards for mine but not sure what to get. I'd rather not use raceblades if I can fit full guards but the pompino doesn't have a rear bridge to secure a rear guard to.

Freshtripe have a number of mudguards designated as compatible with both 700 and 27", noticed several were out of stock a few weeks ago last time I looked but may have changed now.

Might have made a bit of an oversight. Rebuilding my MTB for fairly lightweight trail riding and wet weather commuting, bought a cheap Kona P2 for but now realise there's nowhere to mount stays for the front mudguard. Disc brake mount looks like it'd do on one side, but there's nothing on the other. Is there anyway round this or is it a case of finding a different fork?
Might just ditch the commuting idea, my commute's only about 2 miles anyway, barely long enough to get a wet arse.

I'm trying to figure out how to fit Mudguards to my Mercian. It's an old path frame so it has muguard eyes and plenty of clearence but the brake bridge isn't drilled for a brake so nowhere to afix the mudguard too. There is no way it's having cruds or raceguards on it as they will look ridiculous. I'm guessing I could bodge something with p-clips but that would potentially look ugly. Ideas?

i use p clip on bottom chainstay bridge and cable to over brake bridge undrilled.

Stay off the Cruds people. The new ones may well be more durable than last years but they will not hold shape and rub on almost every trip no matter what I do. The fact that they have little brushes which hold the guard away from the wheel says it all really. Should have bought something with stainless steel stays in hindsight.

I don't think I am. There's only 3 points of contact for me to cock up. As far I can tell, the problem is that they're just too flexible. To be clear, I'm not talking the rear wing style MTB jobs but the road bike close clearance things... Any thoughts on where I might be stuffing it up appreciated, although tbh I just reckoned on them being rub! I hate any noise from my bike at all, even the shhhh of the brushes on my rims.
try crud catcher road racers, they zip tie snug whether you have rear brake or not.
