i finally recieved my desire (which was a desire) so will be asking plenty of dumb questions. Firstly...
Is there any sort of agreement on the best or most useful general apps? And more importantly, what's the best music player? All my stuff is on itunes so maybe that doubletwist one flagged a few posts back? anyone used it?

Here are my top tips
Tasker - nuff said
Layar - Reality Browser, probably the best app on Android or any smartphone.
Last.fm - Player / Radio for Android.
ScrobbleDroid - Scrobbles tracks to Last.fm from the standard HTC mp3 players.
Album Art Grabber - Finds missing artwork for your mp3s.
Barcode Scanner - Scan Barcodes, and QR codes (useful with the site I've linked below).
BeebPlayer - iPlayer for Android. (update - now myplayer)
FxCam - Really fun camera app, Toy Cam mode is the best! I use this more than the normal camera!
PicSay - Like Photoshop on your phone. I have the Pro version and it's deffo worth paying a few quid for. So many options!
Electrum Drum II - Android drum machine!
GigBox - Finds gigs in your area, or can search anywhere. Ties in with Last.fm if you want it to - I like this feature.
Google Sky Maps - Works with GPS to show constellations etc.
SMS Popup - Texts appear in a pop up window. I really like this as you can read texts without unlocking. Just be sure to turn off notifications in the standard messaging app or you'll get two alerts per SMS received.
ES File Explorer - Really powerfull file explorer.
AndroZip - Handles zip, rar, 7z etc. More useful than you might think on a phone.
AppManager - Really good app manager.
Appbrain - synch and manage installed apps, search the market for apps
Apps Installer - Usefull for installing apps that have been backed up to SD card or downloaded from email.
WiFinder - Good for finding free wifi to tap.
Notes - Better than the standard Note app.
BatteryLife - Really cool battery widget for homescreen. Gives power remaining in % which is handy. The icon is really nice too.
AudioManager Console - Volume controls for everything on your homescreen.
Useful Switchers - Turn on / off most things on your phone from one app.
AdFree - Blocks ads in other apps. To update you need to revert first. Will make sense if you d/l it.
Check these sites for more:
http://www.androlib.com/ (use Barcode Scanner to scan the QR codes and it will take you straight to the app in the Market on your phone)
edit: keypass - password manager - use the same database file on your phone and PC(S) and never forget a password again - useful as it copies a username and associated password to the clipboard - good for umpteen stage bank security for online banking log ons
