  • Should be fine, if you don't like it you can add suspenders later.

  • i have a serious hankering for a 26er fixed mountain bike - was thinking a genesis or do you reckon a suspended fork would be more fun?

    Depends where your riding.

Like Andy.W says, you can always add a suspension fork later.

  • trails mainly, nothing too knarly (i am so street!). tis a good point, i liked the look of those orange p7 ones but none seem to be kicking about anymore. maybe i will but a wanted ad up for a genesis or similar:) cheers

  • could just ride my langster in suspenders, maybe that will satisy my craving?

If it were me I'd get a OTP with a frame I liked, that fitted well, and was worth uprading parts around.

There's just too many varibles to know what you want striaght off.

As someone who has never really mtn biked before I am starting to think along the same lines. In fact, I'm wondering if the best value for money, most fun/versatile intro to mtn biking would an otp hardtail, geared, disc braked, aluminium framed bike. Much as I like the idea/look of a steel, SS, fully rigid bike, I just think I risk limiting myself unnecessarily. Also, I don't find speed entirely independent from fun, so if I feel a bike is causing me to slow up because of its limitations I find it frustrating. Plus something like a SS Inbred would cost about the same anyway.

The suspension forks on low priced OTPs are often nasty though, and would possibly need upgrading anyway.

I would'nt say running a singlespeed slows you down as such. It depends on the terrain. But if you have long flat sections, then the low gearing needed for technical bits, gets spinny quite quickly.

The simpler a bike you buy, the better the components should be for a certain price point.

Not sure of your budget but these would be decent buys (IMHO).
Merlin OTP with deore groupset and Rockshox Tora fork
    £699

The Scandal Comp from On-one, has a very similar spec for £680

  • both look interesting, and in my price range. Unfortunately, any potential purchase is a little way off, but will be adding these to my considerations. Cheers,

  • just bought an NS Bitch frame for polo, running a 32/21 gear on it. super duper spinny but great for polo!

  • thread read failure

Do a search for OTP, and it will come up. So that this thread remains as a good resource for MTBs,
maybe move the non-MTBs to the OTP main thread, or the 2011 Bikes thread? Just a thought like.

  • so, i was reading through this thread last week going "oh yeah, cool bikes" etc.
went into my local (amazingly awesome) bike shop, and in the bike park area there was a single speed, brown kona, with disc brakes and a rigid fork. it had sliding dropouts. im guessing this was the unit?
i feel in love, i tell ya.
i dont think it was the OTP unit though, what are peoples thoughts on the units and pros/cons of building my own or buying an otp unit?
bear in mind i'm an average home-mechanic, but i have no idea about disc brakes (which i'd probably go for)
is the OTP version specced well? again, i dont know much about MTB stuff.

  • A few people have the haro mary http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/14572/Haro_Mary_SS_Bike_2009

Go read this, lots of useful info on 29ers

Dont have any first hand experiance with one. But have heard great things, and the spec sheet looks good.

Building your own will cost a lot, and is maybe a better idea if you know what you want, components and build wise.

The Unit looks cool, partly because of the contrast of the skinny steel tubes and the huge tyres. There are a few others like it around (as mentioned, the Mary).

If it was'nt a OTP it might have been the 'Big Unit' which is a racier Scandium model.

  • ive been doing a bit of research etc.
it was the unit, just an earlier (2009 i think) model with upgrades.
i also found a unit on ebay with avid bb7s for 350 quid.
seems like a good deal to me.

Saw this ad for a Cannondale 1fg in the classifieds. http://www.lfgss.com/thread55260.html for a really nice price. I've had a few different ss mtb's over the years but always end up back on a 1fg.

a couple of Cotic builds from last year

If it fits and is in decent nick, it sounds like a good deal. I'm sure you'll get loads of fun out of it.

    Those yellow Cotic's are lovely.

  • fast forward a bit and no, i didnt buy a bike :(
it seems a bit strange that i was so set on the kona. so i was wondering, are there any 2011 or 2010 single-speeds that anyone likes the look of? i'd probably be looking for a sus fork with discs.

  • been looking at the Cotic website and was wondering if the Simple is a 29er? silly question?
