  • Anybody have any tips on avoiding the loose snow that grips on the rear tyre and tries to fill your shoes from behind? My mudguard carefull funnels it round - would a clip on help it get thrown off before it get to the 'down' part?
I'll try to get a photo of mine when I go out tomorrow if I remember - it is about -18 now so I will probably be in a rush to get going.

    Winter Hack? Furking Hell...

Are the small wheels not skittish in the snow? I realise you have spiked tyres, but still...

    Nice bike though.

  • wish that was my winter hack! (and yes - hipflash/thermosflask combo)

  • This morning - damn phone won't expose properly for snow.
Nice ride to work, about -10c but really nice compacted snow on all but 100 metres of the trip.

Smaller wheels are always more skittish - even in the summer you need to take care not to pull quick manoeuvres while your front wheel is on drain covers etc. But I imagine that riding on snow would be a bigger factor in how skittish it feels compared to other bikes than the wheel size would be. I'm so used to it now that I'm even finding that it feels a bit like a sit-up-and-beg compared to the AM2 I've been riding around all summer, which has 17" wheels.

  • Made a couple of changes in regards to winter/snow riding. First off I invested in some continental 4 seasons and then some gloves and a scarf, that is all! It seemed to work alright this morning on the way to work in 2" of snow. I wasnt going at my usual pace and took it easy on the bends, took twice as long as normal but I was getting around find albeit at a slower pace.

    My bike

    My drive

    Good times :)

  • Good work....where is that?

  • A little village called West Chiltington about 35/40 miles south of London, not far from Horsham and Dorking. It was really liberating, had loads of people telling me I'm stupid trying to ride about but I was one of the few to actually get about this morning which is liberating!

  • Unless they've moved it a long way from Pulborough, it's a bloody long way from Dorking!

    My great aunt lives there.

  • It does nearly neighbour Pulborough, but Dorking and horsham are the closest towns or chichester. All are about 15/20 mins away, I assumed most people were from inside London, no one knows where West Chilt is usually :).

  • I'd have gone for Crawley/Gatwick - nearer than Dorking? But you forget that, for reasons unknown to any mortal, North Horsham gets its own mention on Googlemaps now....

  • dorking is nearer than Crawley/Gatwick, the routes I use anyway.

You're putting the miles in. Dorking is almost twice as far as Crawley!

  • I think I spoke too soon, just came over the crest of a hill in the dark and the whole road was black ice! Safe to say I went down, pretty hard! Luckily no one was around to see haha. Take care on the roads people!

  • Snow I can do, but the ice today was just bit much.
Surprisingly the icy cycling lane finished when I crossed the Lea Valley towards Clapton.

ps. skidding in the fresh snow which is covering icy road is lush!

  • Yay for Clapton!

(It looks as if it'll ice over here, too, overnight. Riding in the falling snow just now was fun, though.)

  • i will last maybe a mile tomorrow. let's see.

  • Absolutely love that bike dude.
