I have some leg warmers and think they are crap - they always slip down to my knees after 15 mins cycling.
I have overtrousers too but they alway get you wet from sweat so I only wear them if it is pouring. -

Corduroy?

Never had this problem myself. Do they have silicone gripers at the top, and are you wearing them inside your shorts?

I was bought a high end pair of over trousers several xmas's ago. They are nasty things, that bathe my legs in sweat, make loads of noise, and generaly feel shite.

+1 legwarers only work if you wear them under some lycra shorts. Otherwise you need suspenders.

Yep my knee/leg warmers (not sure which they are) are always slipping down, does my head in.
Anyone ever tried Ventile trousers? I really want some for foul weather.
-
• #107
I wear them under lycra leggings - still seem to slip. The problem is is that you can't pull them up easily when they are underneath! I look like I have some kind of itchy skin disease at the lights!
-
• #108
under leggings will not work you need the tight band with the gripper of the shorts over the leg warmers and the gripper of the leg warmers on your skin. You will not have the tight gripper of the shorts to keep them up. That's what they are designed for, to turn shorts into leggings.

I see - I'll have to add another layer then!

Just bought some army surplus goretex trousers & neoprene overshoes for the really hellish mornings (like yesterday's snow). Otherwise it's jeans for me.

Corduroy?
This.
I usually wear a suit, but forgot my trousers so wore some corduroy trousers I had at the office. Cycled home in them and realised they're a really good choice over jeans.
I can't see them being that great in the wet, but no worse than jeans.I'm tempted to get another pair, as they're casual enough to stop you looking overdressed, but smart enough to wear for work.

Firstly, the jeans comment is just something I hear a lot. Makes sense to me though.
Secondly, my winter tights purchase fell through. They got as far as my postoffice, but after spending 4 fecking weeks, calculating duty. Customs + local post presented me with a bill for £80. Thats £80 for £145 worth of thermal tights and top. I told them to forget it.
So suggestions for uber warm bib tights?
Those shouty ones Planet-x are selling look like good value. Decent pad and super roubaix fabric.

They do two, but I cant tell the difference in the pads. These campag raytechs look good. But Im not sure what Vuelta fabric is. Is it the same as super roubaix?

They do look good. Windproofing on bibshorts/tights is always a bit uncomfortable, but well worth it in my eyes.I found some Softshell bibtights though, and as these have been described as 'overkill' I know they will be perfect.

I have some Carradice Duxback trousers for sale. Perfect for a long-legged gent, who wants to keep his pinstripe strides dry.

funnily enough after starting this thread I opted not to buy cycling specific waterproof trousers for the bike and instead bought some cheap walkers/farmers/builders waterproof over-trousers which i seldom use. £5.
it's small, light and I carry it with me everywhere and has lasted 3 years so far.
keeps my dry for the hour/half hour I need them for.the best compromise

at the expense of bumping an old thread, I've just received a pair of these and thought they might be a good recommendation for others. They have a large fit, both baggy and large around the waist as they are designed to go over other trouser,s but look and feel like quality, have velcro straps around the ankles so you can tighten them there and they wont go in your chain, and are gore tex
they also look a bit smarter than your regular over trouser. At just over £30 I don't think there's much that could beat them. I'm a 29" waist and bought a small, which is a little too large for me but the pull cords at the waist do them up tight enough. Delivery time was not long either.
Having said this I have not yet tried them out in the rain so all this advice might >>>>>>>>>

Last couple of years I have worn army surplus goretex over trousers.
No more!
This year, Swrve shorts and RAB gaitors, the shorts leak a bit where you sit on them, but I reckon that with a mudguard they'd be fine.

Bought some Montane Fetherlite trousers for when it's pissing down, as I wanted some waterproof trousers that could pack down small and could always be in my bag. Have been impressed with the Fetherlite jacket so thought I'd complete the set. Will post back on here once they've been properly tested...

i had some montane trousers - the ones that are heavier than featherlite
they were great for a while but road grit being sprayed up then caused abrasion (before i had a rear mudguard) at which point they got totalled, initially a few small leaks, then holes wore through, finally one of the holes got snagged on my saddle - could have been quite dangerous
i tend to have a pair of rapha touring shorts in my bag, if its pissing down i will put them on and keep my trousers dry in my bag

I have some 10-12 year old pair of plain black pertex trousers. No brand. Totally waterproof. Zero features.

I wear a pair of ex-Post Office over-trousers, which my then girlfriend bought for £1 in a jumble sale 10 years ago. Look really, really bad, but still keep the water out.

I've got two pairs of army surplus goretex trousers if anyone wants them?
Size L I believe.
What else am I meant to cycle in? It seems pointless to cycle 4 miles in lycra to then get changed.
