Good plan. You won't get lever index 5, but you could stop down some by using the limit screws. In terms of indexed friction shifters, consult the Sheldon Brown table for compatibility of spacing. Broadly, 5/6/7 the same, 8/9 ditto, 10+ different. Broadly, but there are quirks to some of that.
