The clarity of ice is all to do with the purity of the water, quantity of Total Dissolved Solids present etc. Ice sculptures use very pure filtered water to get the clarity.
Try freezing tap and bottled water in your cube tray at home - you'll be surprised at the difference.

according to this guide about ice fishing clearer ice is usally stronger (and harder to drill) than the milky ice.

A quick glance at the net tells me cloudy ice has bubbles of gas in it, clear ice doesn't, so maybe neither is stronger.
Easy experiment.
Buy a yorkie and an Aero, form then into a brigde between too books, and see which will hold the most load.
You should probably carve the aero into the same shape as the yorkie for scientific correctness.

I'd have eaten before it got anywhere near any books.

Cant.
Currently building bridges out of 'french fries' crisps, and 'potatoe sticks' crisps. Should be the same principle.
hold on.
........Feck!
Damn you mais based potatoe impersonator, destroyer of science.

Well, I bunged a few cubes in the tray this arvo, and after a few minutes hacking with the old Swiss Army knife, knocked this up. It does go really clear.

I have a currently idle 26er frame lurking about. I'm thinking some Pugsley forks and a Large Marge/Larry front-end....I wonder what the biggest tyre I can get in the back is.....

photo.JPG by monomaniac(tom), on Flickris that a hip-flask/bottlecage combo? awesome.
Isn't the clarity of ice to do with how slowly it was frozen and how large the crystals are? I thought I heard that on some program about ice sculptures - the blocks are frozen slowly to make the crystals large and the ice clear.
