  • Recently I have started to feel a little out of the loop when it comes to computers and all that it entails to make them work. It seems everyone knows HTML or some other vague acronym that I have no clue about. I know a lot of people here work in the I.T industry and was wondering if you could give me a good starting point to get a basic understanding of programming.

  • I learned everything here: http://www.google.co.uk/

Books, self-training, night school, uni course?

  • I think the programming for dummies book is a good place to start. That's what my computer sciences friend told me recently. You can get an ebook of it as well.

  • Google is a pretty useful resource. The first two links might be useful.

Tiswas beats hippy by a minute.

  • why not learn how to whittle wood or paint pebbles to resemble english freshwater fish instead of playing with computers.
lets face it I.T. people are just the filing clerks of yesteryear.

  • Earning £450 a day for a middling position.

  • "Your inability to use a search engine is my job security"

    Amen to that

I wouldn't get out of bed for £450/day.

  • What Tynan fails to mention is that he is one of the UK's leading mattress testers.

He is paid £450 a day to lay around farting and watching Bargain Hunt on a black and white portable telly in a box room.

The second part is horribly close to the truth.

Going to get this printed up for our office, sums it up perfectly.

Just in case this sentence confused you, ebook is not an acronym. It is in fact short for electronic book. So basically like a real book only you read it on a computer screen or other device. :)

I'm putting that good shit in my work email signature!

  • I got taught a bit of C and Vb at uni. Always knew a bit of HTML but it was discovering VBA in Excel that really developed my knowledge.

I dunno if you've every "recorded a macro" in Office before. You hit the record button, perform an action you want to repeat a lot, hit stop, then when yu press play or the shortcut you've assigned the macro to, it will repeat what you did. You can then open up the VBA window and see the code.

It definately adds a lot of functionality to Office and helps you out with suggestions as you type. i think it's a pretty good introduction and will make you look pretty flash in the office.
