Call me a corporate whore, but as i've found in my brief life its all about networking and using all the outlets you know. Theres never any harm in trying - you don't ask, you don't get.
Most large 'corporate' companies also don't tend to take on graduates on a short-term basis and certainly don't offer schemes designed for grads who wish to 'take a gap year' so its hard to find someone to take me on considering my proposition. I'm trying to appeal to perhaps the smaller firm who would genuinely benefit with another mind on board.

Being on the payroll of a global corporate publisher now, having worked previously at a solely owned independent magazine, I wholeheartedly denounce corporatism and their 'pally-pally' incentives and jargon-infested rituals, having compared the two, but nobody cares what I think, least of all me.

This infuriates me a little but FYI, I worked for a charity for 2 months last summer instead of plumping for an internship at an I-bank as a research analyst.
Go to your careers centre at uni and apply for Summer internships.
I'm en route to secure an internship, but its only for 6 weeks. I can't really afford to travel for a whole year so i might as well find some work exp. instead of working somewhere i don't like/has no benefit to me.
