Mudguards and tight clearances

Posted on
  • I've bought this geared bike for the winter with the aim to put full guards on it, however the clearances between the tyre and brakes is so tight that I cant seem to fit anything on. The problem being I dont want to (and I dont think would help anyway) put thinner tyres on as they're only 1 1/8 and height wont change, and the point was having wider ones for winter, and neither do i want to use Race Blades as they're not going to keep my feet and legs fully dry. Crud Racer ones will fit underneath the brake, but running them with 32c tyres wont work.

So, suggestions as to how to get full or at least a decent set of guards without having to sacrifice tyre size?

  • What about something that clips onto the seatpost and a crud downtube guard?

  • ^this

  • This wanker has them too.

  • salmon guards are good for this.

"They are quite narrow, just over 21mm making them ideal for use on Audax/Winter with tyres no wider then 25mm"

They came up whilst searching this problem...

  • the crud roadracer works very well and is light and cheap. the 2.0 version has excellent
    coverage.

  • 28c max size on them, as I said

  • oh..reading skill fail ..

  • I've seen people who have done a salmon style take of cutting and making a bracket to go over the brake but used a sks mudguard. Depends on your DIY skills.

  • Ahh, now I didn't think of that. Ive got a set of Sks kicking around that I could try and butcher

  • A DIY of this bracket

and the front mudguard cut off at forks and attached with a problem solvers brake bolt

  • It's a well known solution, for the front, to just chop the guard down if it won't squeeze between the brake calipers. You cut just beyond the bracket that hangs off the brakebolt, and can even mount it behind the fork if the brake bolt isn't the recessed type. As for the rear, I would try just chopping parts of the guard out, rather than into two pieces, so you just have a narrow section around the bridge area, and fashion a modification/alternative to the bridge hanger thing.

@tommy only got them on the Mercian these days. That road/path got flogged a while back.

  • Looking at them again, it seems the rear I can mount over the top of the caliper and with a bit of bending and bodging probably get it to fit. The front looks like it might need to be chopped but might without too much bother. Off for p-clips I go...

  • waterproof socks + trousers...?

  • Solved, doesn't look too pretty but works. And I cut myself too, blood, sweat, tears, the lot.

  • That's hat iv had to do with my rear crud roadracer, ecxapt the brake moves it to the side and my arsenic still gets wet.

  • You did a good job on the front one.

I've done that too, but it seriously weakens the gaurd and failed, but it did take about a year to fail.

    Good.
