  • Boris Bikes KenCycles available for all from Friday week 3rd December.
    http://www.metro.co.uk/news/848169-boris-bikes-available-for-everyone-next-week

  • Saw a guy in Regents Park this morning trying to put his own bike into a barclay stand...
I read this earlier in the thread, so i'm wondering how often this happens?

  • I've spent a good few hours zipping around between Camden and Charing Cross today and it does become pretty tedious for there to be so much Boris Bike parking space but nowhere to chain other bikes.

Come on TFL...how about bike racks next to some of your BBike stations?

  • I am writing to you to ask that, with the weather as it currently is, you take extra care when using Barclays Cycle Hire, particularly on roads which may not have been gritted.

It is our intention to keep Barclays Cycle Hire fully operational during this current spell of cold weather. However, should it become difficult for us to deploy our cycle redistribution vehicles due to the snowy and icy conditions, then it may be necessary to review this.

TfL is of course working around the clock and liaising with colleagues in the local borough councils to keep the roads clear.

TfL's cycling website has been updated with hints and tips to help you get the most out of cycling in London this winter. For more information please visit the safety and training pages at tfl.gov.uk/cycling

    Yours sincerely,

    James Mead
    Operations Manager
    Barclays Cycle Hire

They really do care about us.*

    *not getting sued

  • Will they be dropping the tyre pressures to suit the conditions?

  • Will they be dropping the tyre pressures to suit the conditions?

Or issue barclays pins to do it ourselves

  • if this was holland the letter would read more along the lines of.....

    *"Dear All
Its snowing! yay! Everyone finish work early then come out and play snOwball fights in the park. Bring your bikes and we can have epics fun. There might even be time for a little schmoke :p

    Bikes in SNO YO!"*

    We must learn from them.

  • Only 1/4 of the schemes riders are women...
Beacuse, (according to the Standard) of the traffic, they get sweaty and the bikes are too heavy

If women have a problem with heavy bikes, why do so many ride shoppers and dutch bikes? And I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a woman riding fast enough to get sweaty, outside of a forum ride.

    this.

  • I used one of these for the first time in the snow last friday.

Brilliant! Solid and smooth and comfortable.

  • Note - current bug in their system

If you use a card as a casual user (pay as you go) and then want to sign up -it has to be with a different credit card.

I understand that this bug will be fixed in about a month.

  • TFL have just released the first million journeys as a dataset

All the bikes IDs have been provided in addition to start and end location and duration of hire

Some random completly useless bike stats before i delve into the more interesting data eg most popular routes, times etc

Bike 1324 has been used the most times(444 times)
Bike 816 has been used the most hours (461hrs) [I've removed bike 209 as this appears to have been used for 35 days]
Bike 3551 has been to the most unique stations (229 in 403 trips)

  • bike 209 was pilfered....

  • whats the website where you can read the numbers?

  • whats the website where you can read the numbers?

The data is now available for download from the Developer's area on the tfl site

    ****http://www.tfl.gov.uk/businessandpartners/syndication/16493.aspx

It's got someting like 1.4m rows of data though, so you would need to manipulate and aggregate it first. I've started that stage, I'm just trying to work out how to geo tag it to make some route analysis look more interesting.

  • Todays uninteresting fact - Peak time for hire is 8am and 5pm on weekdays (Mondays are highest, this slows slightly towards the end of the week. Weekends are lower and have no spikes)

See attached a geeky Spider graph

  • Slightly more interesting fact: two thirds of all trips are under 15 mins

(I'll not bore you with any more until I can get the route stats/mapping working)

  • my hire key split down the seam in november. ive called and sent emails, and i have been told id receive a new one in the mail before christmas. not had as much as a letter of apology as yet.

two months of my year contract down the drain.

  • i used a bike today for the first time. i went there and back.

    very handy.

nice one ken and boris et al.

  • The day those bikes, are free too ride i'll be interested, how do you expect those who can bareley afford the tube and buses to be able to afford a contract to ride a bike? a contract? it seems mad to me! more bike like 209!

  • It's a quid for 24 hours of riding. A bus is £2-ish a journey.
I used these bikes 3 times over the last weekend when I was going into town and didn't want to leave mine locked up and they were a godsend. Over 2 days that would have cost me £6 on the bus, or twice that on the tube.

The only gripe I have with them is that you can't use an oyster card with 'em. As a casual user it takes a few minutes to enter your card details and agree to all the terms and conditions.

  • £45 a year.

that is less than a £1 a week.

    or 12p a day.

    seems a bargain to me.

  • i think it is motor powered transport (buses, tubes and cars and trains and planes etc) that are expensive.

each to their own i suppose.

  • £45 a year.

and then compare it to using the tube within zone 1 in a year.

£45 is massively cheap, with the only downside is simply the availability of bicycles.
