  • On another note, I went to Blah Blah Blah in Shepherds Bush last night for a friend's hen do.
    It's a Vegetarian/Vegan restaurant.
Despite being the total carnivore, I must say it was bloody lovely.
Its BYO booze as well which is always a winner.

  • Ok so maybe not so posh, but MOC and I are going to see an exhibition near Bethnal Green on Wednesday, any recommendations for somewhere nice to eat in the area?
Don't want to go any further east tbh as it's gonna take us ages to get back to Ealing as it is.

    Due North: http://www.bistrotheque.com/

Very good food. Full of blokes with moustaches and no socks on though.

  • That does look nice, I think I can deal with the hipsters for an evening, there are sure to be a lot of them at the exhibition anyway. (which is this incidently)
    Thanks Balks!

I highly recommend for Thai Mama Irene...she cooks home cooking style Thai Food out of a small cafe called Lennie's Snack Bar Wednesday-Saturday from 6pm. It is lovely, cheap...a perfect date place. It's bring your own wine and it's best if you're not picky as she likes to just make what's fresh but there is a menu as well. I usually call first, but if there are only two of you on a Wednesday it should be fine!

  • FFS, can we get back to posh food? I want Michélin stars, not BYO.

Who's eaten bone marrow? It seems to be all the rage at the moment, but I can't get my head around it.

  • It was on the menu yesterday lunchtime, I played safe and got the scallops though.

  • Its the business.

  • Have had it plenty of times but can't remember the last time I had it or what it tasted like.

bone marrow is awesome. It's piss easy too, and cheap. just buy the cut marrow bones, roast for about 25 mins, then push out onto some nice steak, or just eat it by itself with toast.

  • Poor attempt at a CJD joke and CJD is not a joke.

I'm a vegetarian now and if I wasn't I wouldn't eat any old bone marrow, but I find it best eaten on some nice toasted bread with salted butter and perhaps add some truffle or truffle oil to get some depth in flavour. Make sure you really roast those bones well and you'll get some good stock out of it as well.

You mentioned being a carnivore, so it has to be http://www.buenayre.co.uk/

  • Bone marrow is lush. Seriously artery clogging though. Needs toast and good salt and pepper.

  • ...and a defribulator. anyone anywhere else that does it other than st johns?

  • ^^^That's further East, go here, it's owned by the same people but it's slightly more "professional".

Hix do a hangar steak and bone marrow combo which is good. Clerkenwell restaurant is better than the Soho one for food IMO....

  • St John for bone marrow... don't accept any substitutes.

Actually, it isn't - but thanks for the link, I didn't know about A La Cruz.

    Bistrotheque do too.

  • im not really sure i can countenance going anywhere near anything called 'bistrotheque'. jesus.

  • I love bone marrow. Last week I actually went and picked up some veal marrow bones for free from the ginger pig (just called up and was very polite) then
cut them in to around 7cm lengths, roasted for 20 minutes. I also made the st john salad they serve it with, capers, challots, parsley, lemon juice
and olive oil. Then serve with toast and a little pile of rock salt to season to taste. it was amazing.

Next week im going to try to cook their sweetbreads with harico beans and lardons. nom nom nom

@ clefty, Noodle King on bethnal green road ftw, not posh but pure awesome!

At Le Cassoulet in south croydon you get some bone marrow with a chateaubriand... funny watching the clueless eat it

If you want to try bone marrow go to st Johns

Balks I'm afraid I have to say we weren't impressed at all. Overcooked and Overpriced.

    We had the following:

    Starter:
me: Roasted Squid in breadcrumb (overcooked)
moc: Eel with beetroot (fuck loads of beetroot, not much flavour)

    Main:
me: fish & chips (overcooked) pea puree and tartare sauce were v nice though.
moc: guinea fowl with something dauphinoise, although the fowl was cooked to perfection the dauphinoise 'tasted like it should have come from macdonalds' in moc's words.
the accompanying 'seasonal vegetables' for £4 was basically a plate of wilted spinach.

    Dessert:
me: chocolat, pistachio tart with pistachio ice cream: this was actually delicious.
moc: bread & butter pudding with butterscotch sauce, basically had the consistence and taste of baby food.

They also overcharged us for the guinea fowl, luckily moc noticed on the bill.
On the plus side, the service was bloody excellent and our waitress 'Ida' was lovely

apart from that, we are disappoint.

For me the highlight of the whole evening was bumping into (well at the time I thought he was about to run over MOC) Emilie Object in Hackney

  • :(

    sorry.

  • ^interesting. did you get the before 6 prix fixe menu?

  • We were there at 6.45 the Prix Fixe menu lasts until 7.30, however after looking at both the menus the majority of things we wanted weren't on the prix fixe, so we went with a la carte.
Its a shame really, we were both sucked in by the interesting menu, MOC commented that it seemed like the place couldn't decide what it wanted to be, bar/gastro pub/cabaret/restaurant.

The starters were both disappointing, which meant that probably clouded our judgement for the rest of the meal. I've eaten in better pubs though tbh.

and I just can't forgive chewy squid.
