If you eat in at a kebab house sort of place, and they give you attentive table service. Are you supposed to tip?

I was always under the impression that your weren't, just like you dodnt tip at a chip shop. But I was with group of people who thought I was a right scrooge for not tipping. And when I got 50p out they thought I was equally bad. My food only cost £3.50
