  • anyone got any tips on riding a fixie with no breaks? i went town yesterday and been going for the odd ride and its hard to slow down and im dreading the ice

Get some brakes and don't be such a bell end?

  • i have a back one but it doesnt do much because im pedaling against it! "dont be such a bell end" thanks

  • If you find riding a "fixie" awkward and potentially dangerous, why not just ride a freewheel?

Fixed actually helps most people with wet weather handling. But if your not getting on with it, why just annoy yourself?

Try a front brake too if you can find one.

  • cheers for the advice. can i put my front brake on the back? and yeah i was considering swapping to freewheel but my fitness is getting better and im enjoying it more lately and im feeling more control just ice is a bit daunting.

  • No normal bike will grip on ice very well. I rode my mtb last winter and still ended up on my back whenever I came across ice, no matter how hard I tried not to turn.

If you get comfortable on a fixed wheel, you'll find that you have better control of semi-slippery surfaces like wet manhole covers or tiny bits of ice/slush. Your back end might slide out, but your much more likely to get it under control than with freewheel & a brake.

Back brakes have shorter spindles than front brakes, so it wont fit on your fork. Generally most fixed riders only have a front brake because you have your legs for the back, and a front brake is more responsive than a back one.

If you were riding freewheel with one brake, it would be better on the back though.

  • Snow on the Thursday forecast, which I read as freezing rain and slush.

  • Yay. Looking forward to it. Anything that slows traffic down is ok in my book.

  • studded tyres ftw

  • cheers for the advice. yeah defiantly getting a front brake becuase i dont use my back one a tall.

  • if you're not used to just using your front brake - take it steady on your first ride.
Unplanned endo's are not always welcome.

  • front brake + ice = fun

  • front brake + ice = trip to A&E

  • front brake + ice = trip to A&E

yes, fun! that's what i said!

Wuh? I doubt that, it's almost impossible to pull an endo by accident when using your front break and what numpty would use 'just' their front break...buffons the lottaya lol

  • By the way - is it snowing in Brum yet? I need an excuse to escape the office and go home due to the inclement weather and the fact that the country will suddenly come to a juddering halt.

  • By the way - is it snowing in Brum yet?

Nope, no sign of this alleged snow yet. Looks like a pretty pleasant day at the moment. Forecast changed to tomorrow now.

  • I worked through the snow last year and only didn't come off once. Drivers on the other hand... people shunting and smashing each other left, right, and center and had a car sliding backwards down a hill at 45 degrees! Pedestrian too, I saw a group of five schoolgirls all linked arms stack it and domino on the ice -awesome.
Be prepared for less than capable driving.

  • I love cycling in the snow! its so quiet and peaceful. Ice on the other hand....don't get me started, but snow might be the most pleasurable thing to cycle through (apart from dry sunny lanes).

  • anyone got any snow cycling tips?

  • anyone got any snow cycling tips?

    don't rush.

  • the feeling of invincibility often precludes the feeling of being knocked the fuck out...

which is why i don't wear a helmet. i feel too safe with one on. i rely on my sense of danger to avoid making bad decisions on road.

    still... feels good though, no?

    it felt awesome!

What the fuck are you on about sunshine.
    *I doubt... *try it then
*almost impossible.. *i've done it. Does that make me a numpty?
    *numpty...*opinion

Come for a beer tomorrow night mate

  • Me and Pistaboy have skinheads, not buffons. It's buffoon, you ignoramus. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Buffon
