Heading to Perth (WA) for a year - Clothing Tips

Posted on
  • I know there are a few people on here that are from or have lived there so I'm hoping to get some advice on the climate, times to ride and clothing to wear. I'm taking my road bike and about to purchase a complete new cycling wardrobe shorts, jerseys etc.. here (as cheaper), so any tips on what I'll need for early morning rides will be helpful so I don't go under/over dressed. Thanks!

  • For summer... just get the light Swrve shorts and some bamboo T-shirts. If you're going to buy a cycling shirt specifically, go for a very light coloued one from Assos, you want the best wicking stuff you can... but seriously... bamboo shirts from supplier are like £7 each and are perfect in hot weather.

I'd be tempted to put Time Atacs on the bike and stick with MTB shoes. They'd help you walk on beaches and stuff like that.

Heat and climate... in the summer a dry heat, can peak around the early 40's celcius. If you can get a swim in early in the day you'll feel it a little less.

In the summer, skip riding in the peak of the day. You will lose a lot of water and it will drain you. Late evening is riding time. If you do want to go out for a whole day, I'd probably start early and split the day in two with a long lunch/rest to pass the peak heat.

This is just from being there just over a month Nov > Dec a while ago and saying what I would do nowadays... but then I feel the heat quite badly. I'm sure you'll find others who can advise on year round stuff.

  • Seeing as you'll be there for a bit register on fixed.org.au and go to the perth section (link below) they'll give you some local advice.

I'm on my way back from Sydney where I was for 2 years. It's not exactly the same but my experience was in the summer all I wore were standard enduro shorts, rapha short sleeve base layer and an airy set of socks coupled with sidi doms. The biggest annoyance on any ride was just the amount of bloody sweat you built up so like Velocio says, wick it up.

As for winter - prepare for quite chilly nights as you'll be used to the hot weather and now become a pussy to cold climates. I wore baselayer, jersey and jacket in the coldest Sydney weather but it's probably not even close to european cold. Also prepare for it to rain out of the blue like you've never seen before.

    Hope that helps

  • Take one of each.

  • Perth has a dry heat, Sydney has a humid heat. All to do with the temp of the adjacent oceans.
Think of a Mediterranean and that is Perth and Adelaide
    have a look here http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_009225.shtml
Most go riding in Perth in the morning before the Doctor arrives
and might be cheaper to buy you clothes in Aust as there is no VAT and up to $A1000 is allowed before any customs duties are payable. Postage from the UK is very reasonable.

  • wiggle is also free delivery to Aus if you spend over 80 or so dollars, depending on the exchange rate, speedy too.
