• Have a nearly full Shimano 600 tricolor (I think, front hub has three bars, dark blue, med blue, light greenish on it) groupset, looking for

rear hub and 5 speed cassette
rear derailleur (prefer to trade for a rear Ultegra derailleur)
and the holiest of holies - an 80mm stem

  • I have a Shimano rear mech/derailleur 600 for £14 if at all interested. cheers c_c

  • 600 Ultegra (or tricolour as you've described) didn't come in 5 speed nor 6 speed, it was introducede in 1988 & were 7 & latterly 8 speed cassettes I believe.

Seatpost is the older 600 series SP-6400
    Stem is HS-6400
    Rear derailleur is designated RD-6401

  • Hmm...good info. I assumed it was five speed b/c the levers I've got seem to be five speed. However, they might not be original. There's an 8 speed cassette on it right now but the original 600 hub got broken somehow and I don't know if it's fixable. Should check that out, as I have it.

God, there's too much to know about this stuff! I said tricolor b/c I saw that mentioned somewhere when I looked everything up and remembered that there were those three bands of color. So, I can't find a groupset designation on the front derailleur but the rear Ultegra. So while the other bits say 600, it may still be original to the set? Wouldn't the hubs and rear derailleur have the same groupset markings if original? stem and seatpost on the bike are not 600.

  • may have a braze on front mech if I poked about in Aladdin's Cave

  • all shimano parts are stamped somewhere with a product code and a date code. The product code consists of the item code plus groupset, so all front derailleurs are FD, and this groupset is 6400, 6401, 6402, 6403. basically the 6 indicates it is in the 600 range, the 4 indicates the version of this range (with 6200 being the first, and modern 10 speed ultegra currently on 6700), the last two digits indicate the slight changes in the product, which don't constitute a whole new range.

on the front mech on the back there should be a stamp FD-.... If it is something like FD-6400 then it is tricolor model.

On the shifters, on the inside of one of the levers should be a stamp SL-.... Again if its is SL-6400 it will be 7 speed indexed tricolor.. If it is SL-6401 it is 8 speed indexed

it is probably worth having a look at the rear hub again as unless it is physically snapped in half a hub is often salvagable. you may need a new freehub body, bearings etc but its probably worth looking at

Also if the rear mech is 6500 it will be 9 speed, and compatible with 8 speed
Front mechs are pretty mech all the same so you don't really need to worry about that

  • Found a seatpost thanks to your model number list, Mr Bump. Thanks!

  • SL 6401
    RD 6500
    6400 front hub
    BR 6403

  • The RD-6500 derailleur is the 9 speed version though?

  • sorry to hijack but i'm still looking for an hp 6207

does anyone have one to sell

  • not sure, mr bump. it all came kit n kaboodle with the bike I bought. the shifters don't fully work, apparently they're supposed to be 5 speed but there's an 8 speed cassette on it.

@rocksteady: no probs. go on the classifieds, or do a search through my posts, I put up a link to a clearinghouse site for links on shimano items.

  • thanks jay, saw that link a while ago completely for to keep checking it.

  • rocksteady: i've got one of those headsets, currently on a frame in my garden. not in amazing condition cosmetically but functionally decent. might warrant new bearings. you interested?

jayloo: 6500 is 9 speed, so rear mech would have been designed for 9 speed but should work fine with 8 speed drivetrain. If your shifters are SL-6401 then they should be 8 speed. its often quite hard to tell if the shifters are ok without actually setting them up with a cable, mech and wheel+cassette and seeing if they click through all the gears ok.

  • if you think it will polish up can you post a pic and a price?
    thanks

  • chips - I have two positions on the left shifter, four on the right but it doesn't go through 180 degrees before reaching no-more-movement. Should I fix it or get a new one?
