Locks that work

  • Thanks GA2G. I had no thoughts when I posted that link. I "saw the article and thought of you" and this thread :-).

I'm aiming to buy the D-lock sold in that Camberwell shop, when I stop spending on other bike-related stuff and remember to go there on a Saturday. I think it's time to increase my D-lock collection.

My hybrid has a rack so the locks go in a pannier. Gives the legs a good workout, that's for sure!

  • If its the ABUS, and from Edwardes of Camberwell, then fair enough. Though, I'd recommend EVANS as they will price match, and that could easily save you near to £40.oo - eriously. I didn't mention it earlier, but I found my GRPS lock also being sold in East Street Market for only £11.oo. I'm certain the very low tech involved in building a u-lock has the Chinese producing these things for just a few pence, or no more than a couple of quid each. Good to see you looking at such a good lock option.

  • I'm an idiot. I meant Wilson Cycles in Peckham for your GRPS lock, although I might swing by East Street Market one lunchtime as that's nearer to work.

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini Lock: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Leisure

oioi kryptonite fagheddaboudit at amazon for 54 squids. I price promised em at evans where they list it for 99 dorrah so pretty chuffed. probably common knowledge but I feel like super sneaky saver scammer man.

  • Google -> shopping results -> sort by: price: low to high

  • Evans price match too.

  • Will be getting one of these at Evans today!
    Cant wait haha.. sad

  • I try to buy from local independent bike shops.

  • Yeah... hard to weigh it up sometimes.
    1) buy local (best option morally [in my mind] but often too expensive for my budget)
    2) buy online from an independent company (often much cheaper, have to wait for postage)
    3) pricematch from online at a chain store (cheapest/quickest but supporting a chain store)

Not that I really buy much at all.

  • ^ This is all very true. I also cave in from time to time. It's a full time job trying to be a decent human being.

  • Silly question but which is the key number on my Kryptonite key?

Have a longer number starting NK and a shorter number starter with R - don't want to register the wrong one!

In case anyone was wondering the same thing it's the NK... number (at least for my Evolution Series 4)

    3) pricematch from online at a chain store (cheapest/quickest but supporting a chain store)

Supporting a chain store but skewing their numbers at the same time. Better an bung full price from a chain store in my book.

  • What do you guys make of this?
    It doesn't seem ideal..

  • There being only a set number of key configurations for that style of barrel, and there being more locks sold than that number of configurations, I am led to conclude that this shit would happen from time to time but that it's a freak coincidence when two locks that can be opened with the same key turn up next to each other.

  • House door locks are terrible for this phenomena.

  • Coming to london soon with 2 rigs, one that is worth a mars bar more than £5 (two inner tubes and some brake blocks lol) and looks like hell. the other is a bit more of a spend, still not actually worth anything in the scheme of things and I was instantly going to just pick up a fahg mini £50 or the £20 east end bike shop d lock thing.

that is my existing lock, will measure the chain thickness tommorrow, the lock barrel itself I would guess is the weakness on this lock. but that said I know nothing of its 'REAL WORLD' attack strength.
For the north, its more than enough for parking up anywhere. But london is different.

  • That lock looks rather flimsy to me. The plastic casing looks incredibly vulnerable.

Yes, get a Fahg Mini, or any of the 16mm minimum locks from the list on page one. A Fahg Mini is truly the toughest, but its so short, that it is a SECONDARY lock, IMO. Far better to get a bigger lock and lock more of the bike in one go. Leave no gaps, and it will be very secure.

In the real world, only take 10-15 second to cut it through with a battery angle grinder.

  • cheers guys, thats the prod I need to buy a proper lock :D
realistically I will be flying all over london never returning to the same place so don't really want to lug a mini and a bigger lock. my front wheel is pennies and will be bolted in an interesting manor. so short lock for seattube/rear wheel or chainstay/rear wheel.

  • a mini d is still probably lighter than the current lock you have.

    just pitlock the front wheel, check this topic for more information;

Shouldn't give clues as to where your bike will be locked, fun as this one sounds.

  • clues?? unfortunatly I don't live in a manor house lol :p
What I mean't was the front wheel will be BOLTED up in an interesting manor/fashion/method.

THink I will be bringing the ultimate in anti-porn to london with me. Put it this way, a whole working (ish) bike was offered to me for free, in my size, close by to me. And it looked SO DAMN AWEFUL that I almost said no to it. Since then I've made it worse.
However. seems theiving has gone one step further, not just nicking stuff for £££, nicking stuff to cause inconveiniance! Read somewhere on here someone had their decent wheels spokes chomped through to get a sensor for a computer, people having saddles nicked that are basically junk in the first place, scrapper bike front wheels nicked (so bad nobody would buy even for £1 kind of stuff). maybe I should just stop worrying about it and get on with riding :p

  • lock question

    Hi,

What are your views on these locks, either as the primary / exclusive lock or as a supplement to a good U-lock?

    and
    http://www.masterlock.com/products/p...Specifications

It would interest me to know what you see as their weak points.

In case you wanted to trash them, I thought that I would pose the question through PM rather than in a thread. BTW, I am not affiliated with Master or any other lock company.

    Many thanks,
    s

These types of locks have been asked about before, and sorry, but they just don't make the grade.

  • I have done a few searches on them but found nothing. It would be very helpful if you could expand on why they don't make the grade.

  • All of those questions fall firmly into the category of "because GA2G says so". There is nothing more behind any of it, aside from various rubbish such as the "Sold Secure Conspiracy" and a whole bunch of anecdotal evidence about what happened to someone who someone told me about someon who knew someone who locked their bike up with one of those and it got stolen so they are crap.
