If you're riding street, get a brake.
I looked for a BMX with a similar budget earlier in the year and eventually realised for a bit more than £200 you can get some pretty decent mid-range BMX's new. look for deals on last years models, I got a '09 Mirraco Blend brand new off ebay for a pretty good price, and its great.

thanks.
my budget wont really stretch very far though.
im more looking for someone to be selling their custom, or "old" bike if ya get me.
why get a brake? -

why get a brake?
Because being able to stop is kind of a valuable asset.

• #5
fair enough.
so is brakeless riding just a fashion thing?
or a park thing?
i dont really know much about bmxing... you might be able to tell -

ok, so this forum is probably not going to be very fruitful but i can tell you that you should try bikeguide.org which is a bunch of good guys and you will get good deals. or you can look on bmx-forum.COM but keep your whits about you on there because its mostly kids 15 and younger. there are about 70% decent guys and the for sale section is very busy. and lastly try looking on streetphire.co.uk a hell of a load of bargains on there but also watch out for the odd scammer and you will have to convince them to post because it is based up north. dont be put off by the second 2, i have done plenty of deals and havnt been scammed (ok, partly but i got my money back after threatening to go and pay him a visit with the lads) but just check their lists of bad sellers etc and its pretty obvious who is trying to rip you off.
second bit of advice is do not get a complete. you can get hold of ones that may look like a good deal and the guy in the shop can make it sound like a good deal but you will be replacing parts in no time with that price range. only completes worth getting are like 600 quid up and you can probably get better custom bikes for 200 quid that will be better than high end completes.
also ignore people on here when they tell you to get a brake. it is purely an opinion thing. for people that actually ride it is nothing to do with trends. on the whole there are 3 reasons why people are brakeless. first, you just dont need them unless you live somewhere with a load of hills and you have to go a long way to get to spots. seccond people dont know how to set them up and just dont bother and thirdly because it stops you pussying out of a gap/rail or whatever.
edit: one more thing, mostly on the forums you can haggle quite a lot compared to on here. people expect it. and there is none of this dibs stuff. you just send them a pm asap and its usually first person to pay or the first person to express real interest. and be prepared to be going through a deal and then they just say its gone. try and get the money sorted fast so that doesnt happen.

What he said... or you can buy all the bits separately and build it yourself, if you are new to it you prob don't have to worry toooooo much about worn or fatigued parts (although, did everyone read about that lad who's bars snapped and he died? horrible. A friend of mines bars snapped but he got away with it...) and you can get them for dirt cheap.
Might be worth getting a brake if you are new to it too, then you can work out if you need one or not (if you end up riding a lot of street you prob wont want or need one as you will never go faster than 3mph while ledge rubbing).

250 quidsBosh! thats an epic deal... think the frame alone would of cost more new... nice one.
As for brakes... do what you want, but bear in mind a few things -
(1) BMXers often go to some sketchy (am I using the right lingo?) places? When chased and trying to escape I would definitely go faster if I knew I could slow down again if a car pulled out in front of me.
(2) It is a trend, brakeless. The trend is 'go fast, go high, go big, do the same 3 tricks as every other cunt out there. simple and light is best, therefore no brakes'.
(3) The technical end of BMX is more interesting (not better, more interesting), and many tech riders use 2 brakes. There was even an event / DVD called 'front brake revolution' - the trends in BMX were (are) so anti-brake that to have an event for tech riders who used brakes was 'revolutionary'.
(4) It is safer and more legal on the street to ride with brakes.I do literally know nothing about BMX so take the above with a large pinch of salt.
1) Not all BMXers are 14 years old, if an estate or area is too rough common sense prevails and it's given the berth, and no one over the age of 14 runs from the police.
2) Trend, evolution, progression, bent, all just words, it's a different way of riding...
3) My friends who ride brakless are amongst the techest of the group, backwards forwards wobble spin... all of that. people moved away from front brakes in the same way they moved away from 6 sets of pegs and bashguards.
4) Fair point...Have fun with your new purchase, go watch Anthem II for some inspiration... (trailer online atm dvd out in a few weeks, finally!)

before you splash the cash on that badboy have a look at this from bikeguide:
(you may not be able to see it without being signed in thoguh)
the guy is sound and ive done plenty of deals with him. he only wants 400 quid for it and its all top of the range stuff. the deployer you are looking at it a good few years old now and its gona be pretty heavy.
im not sure how much you know about bmx but this one is a hell of a load better than the deployer. not saying the deployer is bad but this is just a mega bargain. link to the bikecheck with all the pics. again you will probably have to sign up but its worth it. just pm the guy about it.
-
• #24
how much does he want for it?
-
• #25
The deployer is pretty light and will be stronger than most bikes now days.
hey guys,
so i have a shitty old bmx that i love bombing around on, kinda want to take it to the next level.
looking for a decent complete, brakeless is definitely fine.
looking for around 200 quid?
not sure i can specify certain things in my budget but i will be riding street not park if that helps.
cheers
joe
