holy hell that sounds horrible - glad as i get an impression that youre fine now?!
Helmet was cracked to bits, broke a couple ribs and a toe, sprained wrist, and back pain for 2 weeks. I have been riding as my main form of transport ever since I was a teenager, and have never done anything close to as dumb as crashing into a bus!

Got myself a new toy. Completely stock with the only addition a set of Time ATAC pedals. Will be changing the seatpost (ritchey), saddle (Spesh Romin - White), brakeset (Ultegra 6700) and tyres (Conti GP4000) when they wear out.

are tri-spokes more aero than full-discs?
No*. There is an ongoing discussion about how far O'Bree would have gone if he'd used the right wheels. I'm sure chrobin has gone for the Hed/Specialized wheels in tribute to O'bree, not because they are the best choice.
*Well, probably no. According to Hed, their 3-spoke is actually slightly better than a Jet Disc at yaw of less than 5°, although it's not clear what the test protocol was. Translational drag might be slightly smaller, but it also takes some power to rotate the wheel which most wind tunnel tests ignore

ok i am building a tourer/randonneur bike on a mercian frame. thinking about going for 28 or 32C tires with gum wall. whats best? panaracer TG dont get the best reviews mainly not seen as the durable tire, what are your experiences and what would you go for. going for gilles berthoud 40mm mudguards so both sizes could fit. i have been breaking my head what to buy for weeks ...help.. pls

Do you want gum walls or the best 28-32c touring tyres?

the fatter the better.
make sure the mercian have the clearance to though, and the panaracer tyres are fine, I have the 28c version on my faux-randonneur (road bike with fatter tyres + front rack), the missus have 25c and my dad have the 28c.
the tyres is fine, my dad rode his everyday doing 150 miles a weeks, it still held strong despite a couple of puncture (which were his fault for riding too close to the kerbs).

Holdsworth Professional SL, Record Hubs, Rigida rims, Chorus Mechs, Cinelli Stem/Bars, Chorus brakes.
Old Olmo beater, Fixed, trying to think of custom rattlecan paintjob as the original paint is mostly flaked off.

a compromise of the two.

ok TG it is then. but 28 or 32. i've measured the clearance to make sure the 40mm fenders can fit between the fork bridge. i am guessing that both will fit, the angles are pretty loose.

if the mudguard can fit, so should the tyres.
If you want the very best tyres for touring/randonneur, the Grand Bois Cypres is an excellent tyres that come in 30c and 32c, they're very smooth, comfortable and offer plenty of grip.

Seeing dmczone's lovely Mavic crank, and browsing the posts of people's current builds, makes for nice thoughts. It's great to see people getting down and building their own machines, something I discovered just 5 years ago. Now, after I think I've built my last bike along comes something else. I have actually started thinking of selling a bike, my 2nd build, a 1982 Trek 730, so maybe I haven't gone completely mad.
Anyway, since building and riding my first fixed gear, a 2009 Chesini Pista (photo a few pages back in this thread), I started getting interested in an English fixed gear from the 40s or 50s, a time when fixed gear was what most people rode, for racing, touring and simply getting to work. They called them road/path machines back then. Then, an unrestored one from 1954, with all period parts apart from the pedals, came up on ebay and in my size - the walls started closing in and the world ceased to exist, and I bought it.
It turned out to be filthy and the paint completely shot so I had it repainted and repro transfers applied and got to cleaning everything. 10, perhaps 20 years of oil and grime had to be got off and a lot of elbow grease used but it's getting there. Attached are 2 photos; 1 showing the shot paint and a hint of the grime between the crank arm flange and the BB cup, and a 2nd of the bike on its way to assembly. Got tyres today for the 27" Weinamann rims. Hoping to have it all ready by Saturday for a ride with a maniac Japanese friend who has about 16 English lightweight machined from the 30s to 50s... will I make it?

I think that this is just going to be too small after riding it to work.
So this may now become my beater
I'll ride that to work and see how I get on but when I took it for a test ride it felt a perfect fit, and doesn't look like anyone wants to buy it anyway.
