  • Surely they should supply helmets with the bikes?

I'm new born, checking this place out!

Perhaps you should wait until you grow up a bit before weighing in on subjects which are clearly well above your intellectual capabilities.

  • Surely they should supply helmets with the bikes? Someones gonna have a nasty accident and sue LBC on health and safety grounds!

    There must be a disclaimer.

Also, I don't fancy the idea of using a hire helmet that is covered in another 20 random people's sweat, hair wax and dandruff every day...

  • Deff rate the new cycle lanes around town, keeps those damn car drivers off your back wheel, they should roll them out all over the country IMO.

So what's wrong with the road we have?

  • You should share your pearls of wisdom on the helmet thread. No doubt you have fresh new ideas that nobody has heard before.

Perhaps you should wait until you grow up a bit before weighing in on subjects which are clearly well above your intellectual capabilities.

Some people are just delirious with cycling, unlike you jaded old bastards. ;)

  • then they need to drink more liquids

As opposed to the shitty 2 foot wide lanes that mean the damn car drivers keep buzzing past you...

  • Took the girlfriend out on one for the first time this weekend, she's never ridden in london before. Almost a complete success, nice ride around soho down to embankment and up spitalfields, even got her riding along the embankment road / race circuit for a bit. V impressed she didn't brick it.

Only fail cam when we went to take the bikes for a second time and all the docking stations crashed.

    Pashley for xmas perhaps.

    Nice approach and attitude.

Just seen this... exactly how old is old eh?

We're lready fighting ageism over here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread54650.html

site seems to be littered with it!

    Age is negotiable-ish.

  • The only problem with the ageism on here is that the jokes are getting a bit old.

  • But seriously--I think you'll find that this is mostly people who know each other well just taking the piss. And it's mostly the older members joshing. :) But if you really take offence, I'll temper it. I certainly agree that ageism exists and it is sometimes a difficult balance to achieve between making light of it (which I only do on the forum) and taking it seriously. Hard to be completely consistent if you want to have some fun with it.

  • TFL are apparantly going to announce tomorrow that they're extended the scheme eastwards, covering all of Tower Hamlets and South Hackney. Means I won't have to worry about locking my bike up outside the pub, yay.

Mr Schick Sir - my explanation, and excuse (were that is what is required) can be found here... http://www.lfgss.com/post1764842-12.html

Subject: Expansion of Barclays Cycle Hire scheme

    Good morning,

Expansion of Barclays Cycle Hire scheme
I am sure you will be as pleased as we are with the enthusiastic public response to the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme. Londoners and those from elsewhere have voted with their feet; the scheme has had a very successful start, topping 1.5 million trips since we launched in July and now with over 100,000 members. We could not have done this without you and our other delivery partners.

We wish to expand the scheme by summer 2012. This will include extending the area to include all of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and a further part of the London Borough of Hackney. In Central London, to improve the choice of origins and destinations we will be seeking to provide new docking stations in some areas, and to meet increasing demand we would like to enlarge some existing ones.

We realise that this will be a challenge, given the many current demands for public space, but ultimately the shift in emphasis towards a ‘cyclised city’ which this scheme can help deliver will bring benefits in terms of congestion relief, air quality, noise reduction, individual health and many other key areas.

Overall we hope to introduce around 2,000 more cycles and 4,200 docking points in the existing and new cycle hire area, which will cover 65km². Once complete, the scheme will have around 8,000 cycles and around 14,400 docking points, at hundreds of locations in central and east London.

Planning for the Tower Hamlets expansion is already under way. Discussions with our other delivery partners have begun, and together we will be continuing to explore ways of accommodating the expansion.

We will be in touch again shortly. In the meantime, for more information about Barclays Cycle Hire, please visit: www.tfl.gov.uk/barclayscyclehire

    Kind regards,

    Barclays Cycle Hire

  • Expansion of Barclays Cycle Hire scheme

That's going to make the east-west Barclays 30min TT a bit more of a challenge.

  • someone start a challenge series, with points,a trophy, barclay bikes gros held above the head in celebration.the lot.

I also think there should be bonus points for knee down cornering, effective use of basket space and bunny hopping style points.

    ?Anyone

  • I nominate brickman.

  • good news that the scheme is expanding.

and great that it is to the area where i live. (but i still have not been on one).

and not sure why it takes them 24 months to get the expanded area implemented.

and not sure why not to include the stratford and excel olympics site venues. surely a missed opportunity.

  • and not sure why not to include the stratford and excel olympics site venues. surely a missed opportunity.

I do remember reading that they do/had planned to extend as far as the olympic site. But i guess this will wait until the superhighway in that direction is finished and closer to the time of the olympics.

  • and not sure why it takes them 24 months to get the expanded area implemented.

Planning, innit? For example, the docking point at the top of Bolsover St W1 made it necessary to change the road from two-way to one-way traffic. Imagine the time it takes to get all interested parties on board with such a change, as well as calculating the knock-on effects on traffic flows, risk assessments etc. ad nauseam. Even if nobody raises strong objections, it's easy to see how that could take 12 months from a cold start to a decision to go ahead, followed by several months of construction. Now try to do that for hundreds of locations, and get them all to fruition, including going back to square one when what looked like a good location proves impossible.

  • I thought I heard that because of the way the Olympic area was going to be developed (plans which have pretty much been in place since before the bid was secured) there was no room for boris bikes, so plans for boris bikes around there have (rather usefully) been shelved till 2013!!! Might just be heresay though!

It could also be that deloitte, ge capital and lloyds tsb don't like the idea of barclays bikes being ridden all over the Olympic village!! :)

  • Whos up for a Boris Bike Tour of London? I'm thinking road race, team and individual TT and mountain stages/hill climbs.

    Jerseys for each classification winner...
