  • whoow didnt know such a thing existed!
    learn a thing everyday
    ace!

  • yes, 10 pitch is physically smaller - still looks wrong on a big bike! big chainrings look best imho :)

  • Why does two brakes mean it might have a freewheel?

    It's fixed AFAIK.

Agreed, plus if you're having those brake levers on the drops, only one looks ridiculous (as does a fake one with no cable) in my eyes.

  • ^^ i think that guy needs to use fit calculator on competitivecyclist.com...

  • DA10

    lovely link mate, cheers!

maybe why this bike looks a bit weird

  • Slightly torn on this.

There are some elements that I love, and are pure porn...but in it's intirerety, I think it's got to be anti.

The build: Stainless steel King cages, EDGE bars, seatpost, rims and stem, Campagnolo super record gruppo, White Industries hubs, White Brooks saddle, Paul Racer brakes, Challenge Roubaix tubular tires, Honjo stainless steel fenders, Chris King headset, Nitto M-18 rack, and a custom BaileyWorks rack bag, all mounted on a titanium lugged frame with carbon fiber tubes…. and of course a custom IF Club Racer fork.

I know it's your opinion, (and I'm partly taking issue because it's the setup I have), but I struggle to see how 2 levers and no rear brake looks ridiculous. Plenty of bikes run the rear cable on the left, so it's only the rear caliper you're missing...and I just can't imagine it standing out that much.

fwiw I also like single levers, only really on old skool bikes (pre-70s or so), and with non-aero cable routing...and preferably gum/tan hoods.

    ...and...

Why does two brakes mean it might have a freewheel?..

...well because usually when people ride fixed, they loose the rear brake. Which you well know.

  • That nag is superb. Some good type and the bar tape are what rounds it off.

i guess i am missing something, because if a lever is there, hanging off the bar, doing sweet FA , nothing, (as in that pic of the Vanilla bike seems to show[?]) , then it just looks stupid and lame doesnt it?..now if it only looked stupid, ok, if it only looked lame, ok, but both!!

  • Funny, I always wanted to have a stem like this made. It's pretty much exactly what I pictured in my head.

I know it is far from it, but I got this one - 3ttt Pro Chrome - Does pretty well the job of looking like one ;)

The levers is there so you can ride on the hood, and IMHO, it's the most comfortable position to ride in.

Do cheer up, I rode brakeless with two levers.

A lovely randonneur bicycles, it look wrong because of the white brooks.

Have you ever put your hands on the hoods? Did you find it more comfortable? Did give you more leverage when ridding out of the saddle?

The actual lever is only one part of the function of drop brakes. I think this is well proven by the constant subtle re-design of the egonomics of drop brakes over the years.

Aethetics aside, I find it hard to belive that anyone riding drops doesn't find having 2 levers more comfortable.

  • how come some companies aren't making some kind of drop bar brake lever hipster cyst with only the gripping part for brakeless drop bars?

  • Because you can purchase dummy levers which were design for tamden (for the rear).

  • races to see if he can find a jeremy beadle pic before anyone else

    ahahaha

  • Only rubbish ones...but I found this oldie but a goldie...

  • drop bars plus hoods minus the actual drop bits = bullhorns?
i almost never actually use the drops of a drop bar.
    well when commuting anyways.

wish i could see it your way, but, even after trying, nah, its just lame, if you dont have/want brakes then find a suitable bar thats comfortable (but if your stuck with the attitude of riding a roady, its hard habit to change), if you want the levers then add the brake, they come in handy after all, in the case of the Vanilla bike it just looks stupid to not have the rear brake but still the lever, somewhere to sit your hands when your cruising i appreciate, but hmm, just kinda strange to me..weight maybe, its not going to hurt the commuter bike? IMO it still looks stupid, get rid of the mudgaurds etc etc to save if ness....

    yeah, exactly

  • But if you frequently use all three bits of a drop - straight, hood, and drops that is - then why not mount a lever-less hood even when you dont need the brake

  • makes more sense to add a bike stand, but no one does that do they!
