Film about Four Aces / Labyrinth

  • Hello. This is a special live music event to celebrate the first screening of the completed 90 minute long documentary feature, by Winstan Whitter, of 'LEGACY IN THE DUST'. If you're into roots, ska, dub and all that scene, feast on this account of the legendary club which ran for 33 years in Dalston. The venue later hosted the legendary ravers' club 'Labyrinth' on Friday and Saturday nights for a long time in the early nineties. Many hardcore, Junglist and DnB DJs and artists' careers were launched there - The Prodigy's first live appearance was at Labyrinth.

Interviewees include: Keith, Maxim and Liam from Prodigy, Slipmatt , Billy Bunter, Dennis Bovell, Lloydie 'Sir' Coxsone, Fatman, Bunny Lee, Ari Up from The Slits and loads more connected to the long and varied history of The Four Aces.

The film is a living document of the now-demolished club and entertaining to boot, with a nice soundtrack.

  • saw the first cut of this at the V&A - top tunage!

  • Aha! A night I can make!

  • saw the first cut of this at the V&A - top tunage!

Glad you liked it big daddy wayne. This final cut is longer than the hour version shown at the V&A, has a whole rave section done, as well as stuff about the later soundsystems of the 80 and 90s period. And the live music will make a good night of it.

Aha! A night I can make!

Hope to see you there snowy_again...

  • Time for bumpificating. Roots rockers Party and film screening reminder, people!

I just finished the master of the finished film. Whoopee. There's some great recutting of the early rough version that BDW's seen, and the new last quarter about Labyrinth is flippin' excellent.

Hope to see some of you there.

  • Dam looks interesting wish I could make it. I'll just drop some Slipmatt for this one though.

  • not going to make this screening, but definitely up for the next one, enjoy...

  • I'll let you know when it is Corny. Cheers.

  • brilliant film. Glad I saw it just one street behind where the Four Aces used to be.

I recommend anyone with a passing interest in ska, roots, dub, reggae, early acid house/hardcore/drum n bass or indeed local London community history to go and watch it. It's superbly put together - and moving - and yep, the soundtrack is brilliant.

Nice one Skully for putting this up, great night.

  • Want to bump this to say...

This film is getting a few more airings lately.

If you'd like to see it, there's a screening in Dalston this Wednesday, 10th November doors open 7pm @ Open The Gate on Kingsland Road (opp' where Barden's Boudoir was). Suggested donation to see the film is £5, which will go towards trying to secure a proper release of the film. Here's a cute teaser where people try to recall al the artists, sound systems and DJs they recall hearing at the club over the years...

...on a related theme, there WAS an exhibition of reggae/ska photos at the Hackney Museum...though as it was part of Black History Month it may have finished by now....

  • Skully, can we arrange a screening down south? I know of a pub that's interested...

  • @mocker
That show's still up for a while yet. Winstan the director of this film has part of the exhibition given over to stills and artwork from the club.
