  • don't know about the UK situation but in the Netherlands
you have to pay VAT on second hand stuff (a bit of a contradiction in terms) t.i. if you're registrated of course

  • Is Foffa Bikes really doing over £70k per year in sales? Given that they are buying most of their stock from non-registered individuals, it seems odd to have registered unless it was absolutely forced on them.

Oh, and second hand dealing should be done under a margin scheme even if you are VAT registered, so you only charge VAT on your mark up.

  • dani just look at what bikes and frames are sold on this forum and what they sell for.your frames and the bikes on your website are well overpriced.but all said and done mr foffa you havent got a scooby

  • It's all about the fixed beater* this season, you flumpets...

    • With track ends... Preferably vintage, natch...
  • Normally you charge VAT on your sales, and reclaim VAT on your purchases. However, if you sell second-hand goods, works of art, antiques or collectibles, there may have been no VAT for you to reclaim when you bought them. You may be able to use a VAT margin scheme. This enables you to account for VAT only on the difference between the price you paid for an item and the price at which you sell it - your margin. You won't pay any VAT if you don't make a profit on a deal. You can still use standard VAT accounting for other sales and purchases such as overheads

Is there an echo in here?

  • Worth repeating.

I rarely click on links in these threads as they tend to take you to the WAC page.

  • Yes but this is the WAC this week isn't it ?

  • Quite possibly.

  • Has this been resolved yet?

  • YouTube - The Laughing Policeman - Charles Jolly / Penrose

    Great song,
downloaded it and convert it into wake up alarm ringtone.

  • I actually wasn't aware of the VAT margin scheme on second hand items. So thank you MDCC and AndyW for pointing this out. Gonna talk to the accountant tomorrow and if it turns out that I am charging VAT when I shouldn't then I will obviously be knocking the prices down considerably and hopefully get a bit more interest and a bit more support.

Also to clarify one point, for those that feel we are running an illegit business, we are VAT registered (no. 978 2456 69) and all our components except the vintage frames come from registered suppliers. I should add that our vintage bikes are only a small part of our sales, we are getting quite some interest on our new Prima range and I don't think £450 for a full custom build made of double-butted Cr-mo steel is the sign of a prize plum!

As for Reculver, your Alan might be slightly cheaper and have a better frame but it comes with second hand components (all our components except the refurbished frames are brand new) and no 12 months warranty, so I dont think we are too far off from what you are offering.

Anyway, I take the constructive feedback on board and will look into the VAT situation.

  • And change your accountant.

  • Tiswas, the VAT and company number are stated in our invoices but didn't know I had to supply this data on the site as well. I couldn't find any info on the BLB and Condor site but I ve just added my info on the contact section of our site. Cheers for this.

  • An old raleigh frame for £170+

i'm not here to make a profit admittedly but i just sold a perfectly conditioned Raleigh Clubman 531 reynolds full bike for £100 on here. Why?.. because i wanted to offer great value and i made the simple assumtion that most people on this forum tend to do their research.

...not that i mean to exasperate this thread further.

  • Might I raise a point relating to semantics in this matter? When is an 'old' frame a 'vintage' frame? I mean 'vintage' has certain connotations and an old frame is surely just an old frame or can any old frame when it's for sale become a vintage frame?
This has to matter because it has a bearing on what people think something is worth.
(And if this has been raised before I'll get my retaliatory apology in early, being new here and noting blood pressure can run high on the site.)

  • When is an 'old' frame a 'vintage' frame?

When Dani Foffa is trying to flog it for three times the usual market price.

  • exactly... within reason.

    great tags below btw!

  • dani if you think that raleigh on your site is a patch on that alan you are delusional.the main part of any bike is the frame and gas barrel raleigh or falcon frames were crap when they were new, call them vintage if you like.but you cant improve on shit ,you start with shit and you end up with shit.most of your vintage frames are what you see on the backs of pikey wagons going to be weighed in for scrap
you bang on about your 12 months warranty,it must take you all of 2 hours to build any of your bikes (no gears) nothing to go wrong.warranty is on the new parts.the only thing that can go wrong is the quality of the build.and anybody who fucks that up shouldnt be building bikes in the first place

  • What would James want to add to this thread

Presumably something like the measured response he imparted on a previous Foffa thread

what was psycho cunt called, was it macpherson?

does he use the hacked2 account on here and is he a total cunt or just a fucking huge gash on the face of humanity?

  • Wow this is like the ultimate jonnyraucaramelcappucinogate thread. Have you taken advantage of any community projects/charities/blind children lately?....

  • please note I ve revised the prices after confirming with the accountant about the VAT margin scheme.

    cheers,

    dani

  • now you lot dont all rush at once, form an orderly queue and get your dibs in,dont forget to follow up with a pm cos theres gonna be a stampede

  • So you have sold 5 out of your 10 frames — on this forum and you have not had the frames for sale anywhere apart from this thread? — you have sold them all via PM's with no actual interest expressed in the actual thread? You have sold them when every compos mentis person posting in this thread has expressed the ridiculous nature of your asking prices?
