  • about 46 miles daily, fixed 42 16

  • 20 miles round trip daily east to south, average time 35 minutes riding a single speed 48-16

  • 20 miles in 35 minutes.......averaged???!!!

*goes off to kick my bike*

  • 20 miles in 35 minutes. That's an average of 34.3mph at roughly 145prm all the way on your GI. I'm guessing that you have traffic to contend with as well, so you could do ths faster. I'm very, very impressed.

I have good news for you though, if you can manage another five miles at, what must to you be, a leisurely 27.9mph you would be able to take the world 25mile TT record. Not only that but in traffic you're already averaging more than was achieved by Michael Hutchinson over 10 miles by about an hour, he also holds the record. I really think you should get in touch with the Olympic Development Agency, you are exactly what we need because frankly not even Fabian Cancellara has anything on you. Whatever job you are commuting to, quit and become a pro cyclist, you're wasting far too much talent.

  • The issue for me when considering a commute is not so much 'how far' as 'how long'.

For me, however much I enjoy riding my bike - to spend approaching 10% of every day on it just going to and from work would be just a tad too much; esp. if there was no alternative form of transport on those days when bike travel was going to be a nightmare. You'd really really wanna make sure you're bike as 101% a perfect fit for you too on those distances due to potential for body damage imho.

Ha! I'm thinking he meant 35 minutes each way, which would sound more realistic, 17ish mph average.

  • 20 miles round trip

    .

  • I commute 22 miles a day fixed - and there's really not much difference at all between going fixed and geared.

I'm a bit slower riding fixed than I am on a geared bike, and because the pedals are always rotating you can't squeeze through tight gaps between cars and the curb - but that's a bad habit you're better off without anyway.

You can, although sometimes it means the left foot coming out of the clips to kick off the curb/lamppost/whatever.

I've found that cycling geared or fixed makes absolutely no difference to my speed commuting across London (17 mile round trip). So I commute fixed.

  • If you are riding that close to a crub you are doing it wrong.

  • I generally prefer to be overtaking on the right, but sometimes you have a simple choice between sliding by the static traffic in the gap on the left or just waiting. If it isn't a lethal choice (e.g. the vehicle on the right is a bus or HGV) and the wait is likely to be a long one, I'll take that choice.

    Sorry :)

  • No 10 miles in 35 minutes blimey im not that fast

  • I do 11 miles in 55 minutes, usually because I want to take it easy on the ATB (it's a good time either way), if I'm in a rush, 45 is doable.

But on a geared/fixed bicycles, I can do 35 minutes (no red light jumping required).

It's possible, just depend on how you ride.

  • 14 miles each way, mixed lanes and town/traffic. 44/16 ss and average 17ish, no problems.

  • about 46 miles daily, fixed 42 16

Five days a week? That's just pure hero status.

  • @Dynamicalsystem, sounds like we do the same route - though sometimes I duck out of the hill and ride through Lewisham/Deptford instead (particularly if the park is closed).

Yeah - I go up from Lee Green, so straight up Brandram Road and Heath Lane on the outward, then up Hyde Vale on the inbound. I prefer Hyde Vale as it's quieter than the park and never shuts :). I met a guy in the foot tunnel on a Pearson SS from Dulwich way who prefers coming in past Deptford Bridge. I guess I would too if I came that way.

A guy I was working with this year said he worked in Canary Wharf Evans, apparently there was some guy who worked there that cycled in from Kent, (proper Kent out side the M25) work then cycle back to Victoria and catch a train. Pretty crazy but moust have got him fit!

A mate of mine comes in from Brands Hatch to Blackfriars every day. Geared though still a fine effort. Not sure I'd fancy the A2 in rush hour.

  • That's a good run in. I expect he goes though Swanley and Sidcup though.

  • The ISO standard for stating commute distance is the home-to-work distance one-way. If your home-to-work is 10 miles and your recreational rider buddy boasts that he did a 15 mile loop, there's really nothing you can do about it. You are only allowed to state the one-way distance, the travel time and the equipment used.

    Deal with it.

  • I do 50km round trip each day on a number of different bikes. Two meaningful hills (nothing that would bother you with gears but out of the saddle on a 48x17 fixie for a couple of minutes each). Each 25km leg takes about 55min and then I sweat and smell all the way to London on the train. Lovely. Usually wear just a regular short sleeved jersey with Endura all-weather jacket and trousers. A bit warm even in the coldest conditions, but better than freezing my nuts off.

  • Is that mainly flat? I live in the Arun valley in sussex which is quite hilly, I can do 3.5 miles in 10 minutes with 3 moderate hills. I have been commuting for a week so far and i'm running 44x18, is that a good setup?

48x18 gets me to and from work, but then, so does 42x16 (both around 70" or thereabouts), in mid sussex/the weald.

As an owner and rider of geared bikes too it always surprises me what youcan grind or honk your way up when you've only got one gear.

  • I do between 28-40 miles a day fixed (50-16) feeling much better later in the week now as my fitness has increased since the start of the year. Generally averaging 17-19mph if the traffic's not borked

  • The longest regular commute I've had is 18 miles each way. So just under an hour (53/16 - pretty flat route). Would often take longer route home for the pleasure of it, but I have to say that doing much more than that every working day in the winter mornings wouldn't have been a whole lot of fun. For some reason, an hour seems a bit of a watershed between commuting and going on a journey.

  • @DynamicalSystem, interesting. I haven't thought of Brandram Road / Heath Road. I'll check it out tonight. I come from the Eltham side of Lee Green so if you see a guy on a Albertini geared bike or stupidly-low blue fix with silver shoes, it's probably me.

  • Set a new slowness record last week due to insane headwinds. Two and a half hours for my commute into work on one day. Over an hour longer than my average times.

  • Hah. sucks...the wind is gone this week though. An early 6am commute this morning: no wind, not much traffic. Brisk temperature. No cars for the first 2 miles (which are all downhill...) My feet didn't touch the ground, and I only slowed for one set of lights...it was awesome, even along OKR. Although the big HGV's also go faster when there's no other traffic, which was the only downer.
