• So, I told a friend I would help her with her bike.
I pieced together a load of bits and did the work for free, plus replaced some of the parts with new ones, which she is happy to pay for, only to discover that ther BB is VERY happy where it is, signaling the end of the bike.

So, now I need another frame or bike for her, she has some money but not a lot. Take it from me that she is very worthy of a decent bike, and that things are a bit rough for her at the moment and it's worth helping her out.

Anyone have a small road/track/ladies frame/bike they want shot of? She isn't balking at up to £200 for a decent used bike.

  • There's a colourful stepthrough frame back at ours.
Will dig it out later and get you some pics if you're interested.

Not the lightest thing, but pretty colours innit.

  • Might be, cake. I've sent George some options, I'll see what she says

  • Cool, will sort out some pics when I get home, didn't manage to last night.

  • whole new frame sounds drastic for this one stuck job. if the old frameis abonded anyway you may as well work on until either success with removal or desturction of the frame.

what's the problem with the bb ? - is it old school cup and cone? i've never not got one out - can you get the non drive side lockring loose? - can you loosen the non drive side cup? you can make your own tool from a nut and bolt and some washers for like 2 quid whcih will get any stuck cup out providing you can get one cup out already.

failing that i'd try a LBS - it'd be worth it if you have everything ready save the BB removal.

  • the tool is shown here and has worked wonders on some frames i've had from 1960s with original BB.

hammer and screwdrive / chisel/ punch is good for non drive side removal of ring and cup - much more force available than the official tool.

  • ive got a Dawes, she can have cheap if needed, just because im in a good mood. its got full 105 and im fed up looking at it.

im pretty sure its a 53ish, can check if need be?

  • That dawes sounds like the ticket.
    Yes, please do.

Number6, I'm a mechanic and I have to tell you, that cup and flying, face.

  • Nhatt.. don't give up all hope. a friend of mine had a stuck fixed cup in a steel colnago. Broke my vice trying to get it out, in the end he took it to a blacksmiths who welded on a bar.. came out on the second attempt.

I also bought a frame the other week.. 3 different people tried to get the un54 out. Heat, wd40, plus gas, vice, extensions.. you name it. So i took it up to BikeFix with the idea of using OxyAcetaline on it.. tried the big vice first, bolted a bb remover to it. After a crack and a squeal it came out, without having to use any major heat.
This was a frame i had more or less given up on. It now rides like a dream.. after a face and chase.

Does Saadat know youre giving his bike away?

  • Nah, it's Owens.

Maybe, but I aint got the time.

Thank you to all you helpful peoples, I', going to have to sit down with her and get her to say yes to something this week (maybe even tomorrow).

    Thanks again!

  • So it sounds like you got this sorted already, but I have an old Raleigh ladies bike - complete, but needs a rebuild and, unless rat look is your thing, could use some paint. If you fancy popping over to Richmond to pick it up, it's yours free. Can check the size tonight if you like.
