  • I was once at the Frankfurt Book Fair with a friend. I think I was 17 or 18. We turned into this aisle and strolled along, somehow my friend fell back and I kept walking, as there wasn't really anything in that aisle that interested me. I noticed people moving to the sides of the aisle and staring at me, which I found strange. Well, the aisle was clear, and very long, so I kept going and turned a corner when I got to the end. Then I noticed that my friend was nowhere to be seen. I turned around and he came running up, fairly breathless, going 'did you see him, did you see him'. I had no idea what he was talking about. As it turned out, I'd been walking down the length of the aisle next to Richard von Weizsäcker, who was then Germany's Federal President, but I hadn't noticed him at all*. I looked back round the corner, and there he was. He was much shorter than he seemed on TV.

    • Anyone who knows me will be aware that I'm like that most of the time.
