  • Bloody hell! First cocaine of very doubtful quality, then Suginos made of plaster. What next, I ask?!

  • Guys, there's a lesson here for all.

ANY ally part can fail at any time with little or no warning. Compared to steel it's a far less forgiving material. I won't bore you with all the metallurgical science.

Look at your ally parts carefully, give them a really good heave ho when not riding the bike, and investigate any strange noises or other hints of impending failure.

  • something tells me you're riding them harder than intended.

  • Perhaps the "messenger" bit is misleading?

  • Wait, that's not right.

  • You can see from the fresh/tarnished metal contrast in the second pic that they've been propagating that crack for a while. Makes me want to check mine (Miche Primatos) very carefully.

  • something tells me you're riding them harder than intended.

Don't know about that, I've not been doing any stair jumps or tricks. Just commuting to work and such about 60/70+ miles a week trackstanding at lights. I don't think that can be considered over usage.

  • arent the messengers just old roadcranks with a color added to it? (chainrings can be placed inside and outside the spider)

  • any chance of a picture? Only because the other 2 have snapped at exactly the same place. If you make it 3 then it will make it damn difficult for the manufacturer to deny any liability due to misuse or whatever.

This happened to me in Nov '08. 2006 Langster cranks. On inspection the crack had been propogating for some time. I was lucky, it happened as I was pulling away from a light.
Thread here - doesn't turn up in the search due to the pisstake thread title.

  • Cranks are one thing you really should splash out a bit of cash on.
Sugino 75's, Grand Mighty or Dura Ace are the only way to go.

  • No way! Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago - same crank same place

  • That's it. Product recall time?

  • mental note to check sugino messengers at home for cracks

  • Houston we may have a problem. Two Sugino arms failing in the same place in a week?

    Oh yes that was me!

When mine snapped I had the exact fresh/tarnished contrast.

  • I am checking the crap out of my cranks tonight. Fuck this

  • double check the one that was bent!

  • This happened to Photoben about a month ago, Campag touring cranks though - he landed on his bike though and it landed him here

  • ^Was he wearing underwear?

  • Just back from BLB, they are sending them back so I should hear what the plan is in a few days time. So looks like I will be riding my girlfriends bike for a little while now.

  • double check the one that was bent!

    hell yeah! :)

  • I just spoke to specialized and they said the crank is covered by a 2 year warranty.

Not sure I want another one though!
