Some airlines will - or at least used to - offer some sort of special pricing on compassionate grounds. I've (fortunately) never been in a position to use this service, but I imagine that it's only available from them directly and may not be any better on price than normal ticketing routes, though I guess they may be able to offer more flexibility.

(As an example, here's Continental's policy, though I know this won't be any help directly - http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/specialneeds/compassion/default.aspx. I think Bereavement or Compassionate Fare seem to push Google's buttons.)
