• I got some serious air on the first lap of the Vets race, used the bridge as an opportunity to get past a rider who'd been holding me up on the narrower sections, and committed to hitting the jump at full pelt. What happened next still gives me the shivers, I got big air and landed on the front wheel, thought I was about to go over the bars and eat dirt, but somehow managed to hold it for what felt like 10 seconds but was clearly much less, and got the back wheel down and raced on.

I had two other near misses but neither were like that first one.

I finished on the same lap as the winner (always my first goal in a cross race) and came 13th. I was 9th last year but the quality of the field this year was much, much higher.

It was a great course, making full use of the natural obstacles HH has, and the roars of the crowd make it one of the highlights of the cross season.
