When I did my charity ride from London to Paris I used a sachet or two of that 4:1 stuff and it wasn't too bad.
Another thing I used were nuun tablets (also available from wiggle). No added energy or caffeine but they re-hydrate and help if you are particularly susceptible to cramp after a long ride.
