Right then, hours of gleaning lock tips/info from these pages, and I'm still no closer to making a decision on what to buy.
Don't lock my bike on the street that often, but may have to more in the near future. Was thinking of the OnGuard Brute....but the keys....then I started thinking about the Kryptonite NY 3000 jobbie, but, but, hmmm...what about my front wheel? Slap one of those OnGuard mini U-locks on it.
Even a brew didn't help the decision making...help needed
Cheers

Basically buy the best locks you can afford to. Get a decent primary lock, lsomething like a Krypto new york 3000 or Abus Granite X plus 54 for the back wheel and frame and a krypto evolution mini U lock for the front wheel

I've made a few trips into east london recently with a NY 3000 + evo mini in my bag - it's not uncomfortably heavy. If you can mount one of those on the frame then it's a piece of cake and if you use some kind of locking skewer or bolts then you can reduce it even further.
What's the story with the Onguard Brute keys?

I think there only like 12 different keys

Ok then, so Krypto NY 3000 for the primary. Reckon it's a decent enough lock for London. My wheelset ain't too $hit hot, so I think an evo mini might be a bit of an overkill as it'd be worth more than the front wheel...
Bolted axel on wheels, so can't use the pitlock skewers dammit. Also concerned about bits of my bike growing legs whilst it's locked up...all this because some half-inching ba$tards take what they can.
OnGuard brute (poss others?) key combos are too low, allegedly...
Cheers for the comments

Do OnGuard sell their Mini U-Locks here now? I've looked for them before, and only found them in the States.
Where are they sold? I'd be quite interested in the Brute Mini, and not the Bulldog Mini. -

Not quite a mini version of th brute, but I think it's enough to keep my wheel on my bike...for the money...

Great thread this. Even though my bike is nothing special it would still suck to have it stolen, which happened to another one of my bikes near UCH a few months ago, so gonna lock it like fort knox.

Not a bad idea to have two different lock types if you're already running another krypto...

It should he cheaper, and also I've not heard of any OnGuard Brute lock being defeated in the theft of any forumenger's bike. Of course they CAN be broken, but the lack of this happening is very encouraging.

Mightn't this be because they don't appear to be available in the UK?

Brute locks always have been. I didn't say the Brute Mini, I did say Brute. Plus, from a technical point of view the Brute Mini is easily their strongest lock. By quite a margin.
Clearly you feel that I should research u-locks more carefully.

Not at all. As you point out, you say brute not brute mini (my misreading mistake) . Just pickin you brains on why you rate (or dont) the brute/brute mini series of locks as they dont appear on the original list on page one :0)

Are you sure the OnGuard Brute isn't in the list. I'm pretty sure I'd put it there myself. Maybe have another look? ;)
The Brute Mini is an epic lock that I would definitely buy. Shame its still not sold here.

While not being GA2G, It's an excellent lock. Look on page one, it gets rated as a primary lock (I have one)

Hey cafewanda,
As MyQul says, it is an excellent lock. But before buying it, what is your criteria. If its the lightness of a good lock, then that one is a good choice. Bear in mind that it is the ONLY exception to the at-least-16mm rule for locks in the thread. Its diagonal measurement through the bar is closer to 15mm...which explains its strength-to-size.
These are the criteria that I imagine you might consider, and my recommendations.
Lightness of weight - ABUS Granit X 54
Strongest - ABUS Granit Extreme 59, Xena Bullett XUL, Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini (actually a SECONDARY lock, as its so short)
Cheapest - Motrax Viper Disc Lock (19mm diameter bar!)And cheapest does NOT mean worst. Looking at the bar of the Motrax makes me believe that its the same bar from the lock I use (GRPS), but I haven't suggested that one as its not from a recognised maker per se.
Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive lock. Just been recommended a Kryptonite lock at halfords though price is £40. Also advised that this was "prefered" by insurers.
Any thoughts? Thanks
