Long forks/stem

Posted on
  • i recently bought a frame and found out my forks are too long for the frame (this was not clear until it started to shift forward when i brake). basically the forks stick out the top a bit (i did not fit the forks or headset) and i have been using a quill stem.

i really don't want to cut the forks as i don't have the time/tools/money/expertise.

would using an ahead stem mean that i would not need to, as they go over the steerer tube instead of inside it and use spacers?

sorry if this has already been asked and for the shoddily articulated question.

  • Post a photo. It will help with the diagnosis.

  • cant make my head around of what you saying...

    +1 to pic

  • sorry, would have done before but my photo uploads keep failing.

that bit sticking out is a threaded bit of steerer tube. just imagine it with a quill stem sticking out while i try and upload the pic with the bike built up....

    cheers guys!

  • is that 1" threaded with no lock nut?

  • yes. it came without a lock nut, and i only realised it was a problem a few days after building it up. and if i don't ride this i have no bike!

a guy in bikefix said i'd need to cut the forks down to the height of the locknut...

That's what you do. You don't need anything fancy, just a hacksaw and a file to de-bur afterwards.

  • I have a spare locknut and a hacksaw blade, I'll be working in W1 tomorrow if you want them for free

  • thanks plastic pedals (tried to reply before but internet broke), i appreciate the offer but it's fixed now!

i pinched the locknut(s) from my old frame and it's solved the problem.

one thing though - why would i need to hacksaw off the top of the steerer tube? both nuts went on but for a small plastic washer which i would imagine just sits on the top of perfect length'd forks... it seems fine to me though apart from aesthetics!

  • Is it really ok to hacksaw some of the thread off my forks then? Will the thread still be thread-able?

I have some forks that seem a bit too long too

  • thread nut onto threaded section of steerer before hacksawing.when you undo it,it will "clean off" the rough burrs.Better still file after cutting-problem solved

  • Cheers will give it a go

  • i think you have to cut it!
    no solutions but this...
