i want to be able to be sat in the kitchen, researching interesting and useful shit (like which winter shoes, is ed wrong, that kind of thing) while listening to my music from the stereo in the other room.
that would require a fucking long lead.

You could get a small FM transmitter. I use to use one of these. You plug it into an audio source with RCA connectors and then tune nearby radios into it. Listen to the same tunes through the house. I know there are much more high tech ways of doing this kind of shit now but for $30 or whatever it's a pretty easy solution. I actually built mine up as a kit so it was quite cheap. Otherwise google shit like 'audio sender' or 'media centre' or 'wireless audio' and you'll find heaps of units that range in price massively that play digital audio through your house.
