Threaded crank arms

  • Hi

I recently bought some new pedals as my current ones were no good with toe clips unless I got one of those horrible chunky strap things as I have just gone from SS to fixed. When I took off my old pedals they came off nice and easy but when I put the new ones on they will not go on straight so the thread obviously needs re tapping. Question is how should I go about doing this or would it be easier to get a bike shop to do it?

    Cheers

  • Hmmm, I don't suppose you tried to screw the left pedal into the right crank and vice versa? You know that the left has a reverse thread, don't you?

  • Well, pedal thread taps aren't in everyone's toolbox... I believe that any shop won't ask you more than a tenner :)

I'm slapping myself on my forehead as I think I may have done this :S

I'm new to the whole bike building shenanigans so its more than likely! Any chance if I swap the pedals around and re-tap them that way it would work? or are the thread likely to be too far gone?

  • If the old pedals came out easily then the chances are that the threads were ok before you tried to insert your new pedals.

Before you involve the services of a bike shop, try this: clean out the threads on the cranks and pedals really well. Now apply lots of grease to the pedal and crank threads. Examine the pedal axles carefully: just out from the threads, will be a mark "R" or "L" (right and left, obviously). Right is from the rider's perspective i.e. the drive side crank. Gently screw in the pedal by hand (clockwise). Will it go in? If it does, gently screw it all the way in. If you meet resistance, stop and try again. If you manage to get it all the way in then check that the pedal is sitting straight and turning freely. Now try the left but turning anti-clockwise.

Hopefully, you have just buggered up the first few threads of the crank rather than the whole thing and the pedals will hold. Otherwise, I'm afraid it is a bike shop job.
