Bottom bracket won't install

Posted on
  • I am working on a new build (based on a 1950s Higgins f&f). Tried to install BB today (sealed cartridge type). Drive side went in (although reluctantly). Non-drive side will only go in about half-way - there's about 1cm protruding - before torque wrench 'slips'. The BB shell and BB are both 68mm.

It feels like the diameter of the BB shell might be slightly too small - if this is at all possible. Really don't get it. I'd be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks

  • Sounds like the threads could do with chasing, old frames always benefit from this before fitting a cartridge BB

  • +1 rpm. Take it out and go to your lbs and get the threads chased out. Then try again. Clean threads are the future.

  • Thanks for the advice. I'll be visiting my lbs on Monday

  • +1 Definitely worth the £5 my lbs charged me to do this, esp if you know the cost of their tools.
Put grease on the threads when you install the cups. If alloy cups in a steel frame they can get 'frozen' in with time.
