I'm guessing... but does sound like he was charged with Careless Driving (i.e. without due care and attention) where depending on the detail can range from 3-9 points, or disqualification. Dangerous Driving would probably have been far more difficult to prove, hence Careless Driving.
By changing his plea to guilty on the day of the trial a defendant is entitled to 10% off the final 'disposal' from the Court. This rises to a third off if a defendant pleads guilty at the first opportunity.
