Returning to Hong Kong

  • Hello Hello

After four years in London finally going back to hong kong. I dont know if HKFG is still up, last time i was there it was dwindling a bit. But if anyone rode there before, would appreciate it a lot if you could point me in the right direction. would hate to stop riding after the move.

  • i think Briankwan

lives in HK, hit him up

I haven't personally been back in a while but i think they still do regular rides, best to find them on facebook these days. God i miss the place

  • yeah, i met up with brian last time i was there. Yeah, cant wait to go back. but the lack of cycling is gonna kill me.

  • I think they still do ride once in a while. But HK, I just hate people there treat everything as fashion or trend. They put little interest or passion into something but instead showing off. I think it would be better for you to join a proper cycling club when you get back.
    Peace

  • Ah old HK! I grew up there 87 to 95. My Mum's still there and I'm going back to keep my ID active in February. I live up on Braemar Hill in North Point so never even considered cycling when I was living there as a nipper as the hills are killer, but would love to go for a burn through Wan Chai and Central now, although I'm sure it would be helluva scary and give me a new appreciation of how London drivers are aware of cyclists. Last time I was in Hk about 3 years back I was on the lookout for cyclists and spotted a couple down on the flat spots by the harbour but the riding looked pretty sketchy as motorists on thoroughfares just aren't in the habit of looking out for people on bikes on the roads. As a poster above has said, I kind of always thought that HKFG must be pretty posey as Hk really isn't built for fixed. And all the bikes that I see out of HK seem to have a lot of money spent on them and they're always on balconies and not being ridden! Having said that I'd love to go for a ride when I get back.

  • Isn't the topography screaming out for a road bike? Could you cycle up to the peak or so? That'd be a blast!
I think apart from men on old rusty delivery bikes I only saw one sporty cyclist in full lycra with carbon jobbo during my 6 days there. On the island side, came down Tin Tau Temple Road, close to where my hotel was.

    Is there a velodrome?

Also found this, but cannot read Chinese, so the links were not much use:

What about Lan Tau. Is there roads there? I only came up with the cable car, and that side didn't have many, but I think there is potentially a good ride to be had.

  • I saw some video clips in youtube that a team of ppl cycling along the highway (may be the one going to tuen mun). But it is in early morning and looks more like a cycling team practising for race. Also I saw lots of family cycling along the road next to the main highway to airport.
Occassionally there are ppl on HK island cycling along the tram way. But I think it is quite dangerous if you manage to get your wheel stuck in the tram track.
Generally, most of the things happen early morning or very late at night in the city.

there was a velodrome near Wan chai and happy vallery long time ago. wonder is it still there....
