Wanted: DSLR camera for struggling student

Posted on
  • Hi all... A friend's daughter is studying photography at college and needs a DSLR... Her family can't afford to buy her a new one so I'm checking to see if anyone here has an old DSLR lying around that they're willing to let go of cheap... 10 megapixel or more ideally...Budget is as cheap as possible...

I'm going to give her a Nikkor 28-80 f3.5 lens to start on if someone comes up with a D80 or similar, I think a D70's CCD will be too small for her... But a Canon with a lens would be awesome too...

Er, that's it... Please help if you can, she's a good kid... J x

  • Dude the d70s isabout the same size, the d40/50 is the smaller one. My advice would be to actually go for the d70 as they've all the same features (I assume the educational merit is behind learnin how the camera works not just the quality of output?). I think they can be had for just over £120 in London camera exchange.

Would lend my d80 but I'll be using it too frequently.

    Hope advice is helpful.

  • I thought the D70 was 6mp and the D80 was 10mp? I'll let her know about London Camera Exchange, that could be just the ticket... Cheers...

  • Too small? I had Canon with 2MP and the A4 prints were stunning when the right lens used. Old DSLRs are just not very versatile now with the noisy higher ISO etc.
If she is on a propercorse then something basic with a manual prime is better than overly automated thingy with a kit lens.

  • ^ I don't know what that means Kris, I'm just naturally gifted... Very little technical know-how, I generally shoot from the hip just like my buddy Bill... ;]

  • My step-daughter wanted to do photography and silly me bought her Pentax Spotmatic with prime lenses.
She came back home and told me they want DSLR. What the feck is wrong with people nowadays?!
Eventually hAd to buy her some 2nd hand Pentax K something and a kit lens. Her pictures are shit... but in high resolution.

  • You can get a D100 for less than £100 now. I learnt on one of these, they are great cameras. And you don't [I]need[I][I] more than 6mp.

  • Plus tell her to get a the old Nikon AIS lenses, they are fucking well cheap and the glass is better than 90% of anything you can buy today. Lenses and lighting are way more important than camera body.

  • I've always thought the best way to learn the basics is by starting with 35mm film bodies and prime lens'. Nikon 35mm bodies can be had for cheap on eBay, and unlike Canon, the lens' are compatible with the modern Nikon dslrs.

She is more than welcome to borrow any of my kit, as long as it is looked after.

  • Like above.
Want to start with SLR - Pentax is a better choice, because of the lens mount, Hoops.
There are millions of fantastic almost free lenses out there with a simple screw mount.

  • I was gonna put my gear on the bay to upgrade to fullframe. here's the deets:

Nikon D80 + 50mm f1.8 lens [Both boxed with original cds + straps+battery+charger etc] and has warranty.
Its a 10mp camera with a great portrait /prime lens. Approx. 24,000 shutter actuations.
    will part for £300.

Also have tokina 12-24 wide angle lens, and possibly part with 35mm f1.8 (brand new), obviously not part of the £300 deal...

edit: manfrotto tripod - ball head (forgot the model number) as new up for grabs too. a bit like this

Any idea where I could get one of these for less than £100? I'm looking on ebay/amazon and it's closer to £200. :(

  • i'd be interested in that 35mm..... price?

  • spag: i'll only sell it if i sell the d80.. its litteraly less than a week old. £150? would swap it for a 50mm 1.4 (non DX)

  • Hmm... Lemme have a think.
I've got a 17-35 f2.8 that I don't use much, so might sell that and buy your 35.

Oh. Seems they have gained value in the last two years. Weird.

  • Im not sure I have the funds right now, but how much for the Tokina?

  • looking for 300 for that. great lens. no box but caps and hood inc.

    ED-IF? How much?
I've sold that lens together with 80-200 when I lost my job and now use Sigma which is friggin' all over the place distortion wise.

  • Hello,
This is Lori, (teenslain's gf), could you please PM me your details as the girl who is after the camera would love to call you to arrange buying it. It may be her Mum calling.. if that is OK.
