I don't understand all this getting hung up on having to miss out on your racing to support your girlfriend? This is just a local race league we're talking about. A few of the more serious riders might have a spare pair of wheels or possibly entire bike, but very few have a pit crew hosing their bike down every lap, unless their parents/partners/skivvys just happen to have nothing better to do.
I'm pretty sure the relatively recent surge in cyclo cross popularity is due to its accessibility, and all this talk of needing a pit crew doesn't reflect that. Maybe its all different round your way.
