Thinking about it more, and then on my morning commute - I've now moved my brake levers 3/4inch towards the centre stem giving my hands more of a flat surface when riding more upright... the wrist ache is I think due to my right wrist not being flat, but pressing down where the bar drops down before moving forwards toward the front of the bike... rather than being perfectly flat.
End result is that my brake levers are as close as they can be now... and the light fitting moved to the down tube.... will report back, if this doesn't work I'll be out with a tape measure!
