BB problem... I think

Posted on
  • Hello,

Ok so just been out on my bike, I stood up to pedal and it felt like may chain had come off for a spilt second, the whole drive chain slipped, but caught itself and could pedal, this happened whenever i exerted pressure on my right pedal, its just jumps. it happened 3 times in an hour ride, twice when standing to pedal and one when i was stopping.

worst explanation ever, what should I get looked at? its a new bike (2 months old), I do have a fixed cog on it, could that be loose and slipping?

    thanks in advance

  • tighten your lockring?

  • is it doing it silently?
Also most reasonable otp new bikes have reasonable bb's installed, is it shop bought?

  • yeh shop bought, I only having a guess at BB problem, as I cant see how its happening when i get off the bike, only happens when i exert pressure on a downward pedal stroke

  • can you put the front brake on/put the front wheel against a wall and get it to happen?

  • @n3lson - just tried that, not happened

As far as i can tell it happens silently yes, there was no noise the first time

  • its a shop bought 2010 charge plug

  • tighten your lockring?

    almost definitely this

  • is it the cog just tightening itself up then?

Tighten up the lockring? (a la marco)

  • I'd be surprised if that was the bb, I think they're reasonable miche ones and bottom brackets which are fucked are generally a bit noisy and feel gravelly. Make sure you have a lockring and yeah, tighten it.

  • ah i dont believe i have the tools to tighten it if its the case

  • got a screwdriver? got a hammer? jobs a goodun.

  • clockwise to tighten?

  • Or it might be an opportunity to make friends with your local bike shop, they'll usually tighten it for free.

  • anti clockwise- the opposite to the cog.

  • Buy tools. Enjoy a happier cycling life.

  • thanks guys! will get it tightened and see if thats the problem, i hope so!

This normally indicates a worn rear sprocket (or possibly chain). But this is a new bike: how much have you used it?

The lock ring only comes into play when you are applying reverse thrust to the pedals. Likewise the sprocket should just tighten up under normal pedaling.

  • go to evans they gave me a better lockring for free

  • i <3 evans cycles ha

  • Same thing happened to me.
I ignored it, cycled up a hill and cog fell off just before i was about to go back down it!!
Also used to happen on a different bike with a shit cheap lockring.
    Buy good lockring and tighten.

  • Check the chain is not too loose and the rear wheel is tight as well and not moved forward.
