One of the rather frustrating, if not actually 'unfriendly' aspects of this forum is the off-topic and 'funny' thread hi-jacking. A small minority of very vocal people do treat the forum like a small IRC channel (people without whom the forum would be dull, I am the first to admit).
For people who just check in in the evening, see a thread they think they might like to contribute too, then see that in the 4 hours since the OP there are 5 pages of one line, one word or one photo 'funny' items being batted between 4 or 5 members, it seems like a pointless and futile exercise to try to add to the original theme. I like a bit of internet debate, or silly arguement, but the speed of descent of a lot of threads means I rarely do here. When I do I fear I come across as a tedious bore. Sorry about that.
Maybe everythread should have a parallel twin for irrevelent frippery, leaving the main thread open for discussing the OP, even after the regulars have decided there is no more mileage in it.
