Dangerous road junction - Deptford Bridge

  • Had a chat with a fellow local cyclist last night and I now think I know how the accident I saw in this thread - http://www.lfgss.com/thread47900.html - may have been caused.

Coming from Central London, you go under Deptford Bridge DLR station and just after that you come to another crossroads, outside Greenwich Magistrates Court. Here's what the junction looks like if you're coming from London:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.474236,-0.021858&spn=0.000277,0.000603&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=51.474236,-0.021858&panoid=FgtIyinma8rHk22N-MUvDQ&cbp=12,90.73,,0,5

What she says is that the road on the right (doesn't seem to have any name that I can find) used to get its own green light to go straight across the junction. But now, that has been changed to be matched with the traffic leaving Greenwich High Rd opposite. But pretty much all that traffic wants to make a right turn across the junction and head into the centre of town, nobody is going straight on. If you exit onto the junction from The Road With No Name, YOU have priority, because the traffic from opposite heading into Central London has to cross your path. But they just don't realise they don't have an exclusive filter and bomb straight through the junction. Because that road is where the cycle route from Lewisham towards Greenwich emerges, I imagine it's a popular route for cyclists. She says that every day she gets problems crossing here and car drivers shouting, mistakenly think she's run a red light in front of them. I come through from the Greenwich end daily - and it does APPEAR like you've got a clear filter to go round into London, so I don't think the car drivers are really at fault here. But someone will get killed sooner or later.

Has anyone else been through that junction recently and seen this change to the lighting sequence? I can't confirm it because I'm not in the area until later tonight.

If it's correct, is this a complaint to take up with Greenwich Council? Or because it's so patently a death-trap, are organisations like the LCC interested in taking this up to find out who was responsible for creating an accident-waiting-to-happen (and possibly DID happen at least once in July)?

  • The road is just in to the development there.

Was there the other night and can agree with that situation.

  • I rode through this junction last night.

You are right Tea_Bee that it is not obvious that when exiting from Greenwich that the traffic opposite you is also on a green light. This is exacerbated by the fact that their stop line and lights are about 15yds back from the actual junction as there is space for turning buses to park. What this means is that as you move away from the lights turning right back towards New Cross the oncoming traffic takes a bit more time to reach the junction. This in turn means that vehicles have picked up a little more speed / will be expecting to shoot straight across if that is their intention. So, in short, I agree with you, it is a far from perfect set up. The whole Deptford Bridge interchange is a bit like that though. A lot of cars jostling for position at a multi laned junction that isn't perfectly signed.

Lynx makes a fair point though - there is only so much traffic coming out of a residential development. Although it only needs one car etc. Secondly, Lynx, is it def only into the development. Google shows it as such, but has the road been linked through on the other side to brrokmill rd?

  • The road is Deal's Gateway

It is one of the possible exit points for the Waterlink Way, a cycle route along the Ravensbourne river all the way to Bromley and beyond. Most of the road is LB Lewisham, the actual junction is in LB Greenwich and the main road and lights are under the control of Transport for London. No wonder it is screwed up.

I will copy this thread around to the cycling people in all 3 authorities and see what they come back with.

Was in a car that took a wrong turn thought it looked like a road in to the development as I seem to remember some sort of barrier for motor vehicles but am proably wrong as I was payin much attention to the road just noted when pulling out of the junction.
