have an old bb at hand? could do the diy bodge and use the old one carefully to chase the threads (without grease). it should do most of the cleaning.

Yes mate i've done this but i think there are 180deg remnants of the old BB cup stuck in a few threads that are stopping progress with my DIY threading. Might try the wire brush approach, if i can fix it at home i will!
