Just curious then can I convert an 8 speed cassette to a nine by respacing and adding an extra 8 speed sprocket?
I've never tried going that way, it seems more common for people to end up with 8spd Ergos and 9/10spd wheels, but in theory if you used 9spd spacers with an 8spd cassette you could certainly get it to index with 9spd Ergos across 8 cogs, how well the 9th gear would work I don't know, one of the reasons for the spline pattern is to align the cogs so the shifting is smooth, if you randomly add another sprocket it might not shift smoothly because the ramping on the cogs would not be lining up correctly. You would of course need a 9spd chain.
It's also possible that an 8spd freehub is slightly narrower than 9spd... [goes of in search of wheels and vernier]
