You can make your 9spd cassette work by removing one sprocket AND (most importantly) replacing the spacers between the sprockets with the black ones from an 8spd cassette. Note you CANNOT fit an 8spd cassette to a 9spd Campag freehub, the splines are different, but the spacers have same inside diameter and are therefore interchangeable. 9spd spacers are thinner (to accommodate the extra sprocket) hence why they won't index correctly with 8spd Ergos.
